9' x 12' Jaipur Oriental Rug | Traditional All Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New

Hand-knotted in Jaipur on a cotton foundation with a dense, closely clipped wool pile, this 9' x 12' rug is brand new and has never been on a floor. The field is a deep wine red worked edge to edge with a classical all over floral pattern, and it is framed by a wide ivory border of sunburst rosettes and paisley. The size is the most practical one we sell, large enough to carry a full seating group with the front legs of every piece on the rug, and it belongs to the 9x12 Oriental rugs group that suits the majority of American living and dining rooms. It ships with a certificate of authenticity stating the weave, materials, measurements and country of origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The faint diagonal shading that crosses the red field in a few of the images is a fold mark from flat storage on the pallet. It is not wear, not fading and not damage. Those lines relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The drawing is a true all over floral composition in the Mughal court manner, built from offset rows of large fan-shaped palmettes and lotus blossoms linked by a thin vine that travels the full length of the field. Between the big blossoms sit 8 petal rosettes on ivory grounds, small rosebuds, serrated saz leaves that curl back on themselves, and tiny four-flower clusters that fill every remaining gap. The repeat is drawn freely rather than mechanically, so each palmette differs slightly in shading from the one beside it. The border system runs three deep: a broad ivory main band alternating radiating sunburst rosettes with large curling paisley cones, a camel-gold minor band of small starred florets, and narrow guard stripes on either side, closed off by a plain red outer edge and ivory hand-tied fringe at both ends.

Wine Red Field, Ivory Border, Olive and Teal Accents

The ground is a deep, slightly blued red, closer to garnet or wine than to tomato, and because the pile is dense and clipped level it reads darker in the shade and more luminous where light falls across it. Against that ground the palmettes are shaded in sand, camel-gold and soft rust orange, with olive and sage green leaves, teal and midnight blue flower centers, and small accents of rose pink and brick. Dark brown and near-black outlines separate each motif, which is what keeps so busy a field legible. The main border shifts to a warm oatmeal ivory with a faint honey cast, and the minor border is a flatter camel gold, so the frame steps down in tone rather than jumping to stark white. The overall effect is warm and traditional, and the red and ivory pairing sits easily with dark hardwood, mahogany and cherry furniture, and with green or gold upholstery.

Woven in Jaipur, India

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great weaving centers of the modern trade, and India is now where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is produced. We say that plainly: this is an Oriental rug made in India, not a Persian piece, and the workshops there earned their reputation honestly through disciplined drawing and consistent wool. The quality shows in the handle. Rows are tight and even, the knotting is regular enough that the long borders hold a straight line over 12 feet, the selvages are firmly overcast and the fringe is hand-tied rather than machine finished. The wool takes a visible sheen in the raking shots and feels substantial underfoot, which is what you want from a rug this size: it will take a seating group, chair legs and daily traffic in a family room without flattening.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
