9'2" x 12' Indian Jaipur Rug | Traditional All-Over Floral | Burgundy & Black | Brand New
At 9'2" x 12" wide in the field photographs this piece looks dense, and in the hand it is: a hand-knotted wool rug from Jaipur in a true room size of 9'2" x 12', brand new and never laid in a home. The pile stands full and even, the selvedges are straight, and the cotton fringe is clean and unworn, exactly as it left the loom. The drawing is classic traditional work, an all-over floral field rather than a single medallion, which is the version of this design that lives most easily with real furniture because no part of the pattern is lost under a sofa or a dining table. It arrives with a certificate of authenticity stating that it is 100% hand-knotted and made in India.
Design and Motifs
The field is laid out as a mirrored all-over pattern: large gold and saffron palmettes on the centre axis, broad lotus blossoms shaded tan and sage, ivory 8 petal rosettes ringed in black, and long serrated leaves that curl back on themselves and tie the whole field together with a thin ivory vine. Small cross rosettes and single buds fill the spaces between the big blossoms, so there is no dead ground anywhere in the 9'2" x 12' field. The main border is drawn on a near black ground with alternating burgundy palmettes and shield shaped cartouches holding gold and green flower heads, flanked by split leaves in salmon and ivory. On both sides of it runs a salmon guard stripe carrying a small rosette and bracket meander, and the outermost edge finishes in plain burgundy wool. Look at the corners in the detail photographs and the border turns cleanly, with the pattern resolved rather than cut off, which is the first thing to check on any large floral rug.
The Burgundy, Black and Gold Palette
The ground colour is a deep burgundy that photographs as wine red at a distance and opens up to a warmer raspberry tone in the close-up shots, with the pile direction shifting how dark it reads as you walk around it. Against that, the border sits almost inky black, which is what gives the rug its weight and frames the field so clearly. The accent colours are warm rather than bright: saffron and honey gold in the palmettes, a soft salmon peach in the guard stripes and leaf tips, sage and olive green in the small flowers and leaf veins, ivory for the outlining vine, and a few touches of pale blue grey that stop the warm tones from going flat. Nothing here is a hot modern dye lot. It is a dark, traditional scheme that works with mahogany and walnut furniture, leather, and deep painted walls, and it hides everyday traffic better than any ivory ground rug will.
Jaipur, India and the Quality of the Weave
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great hand-knotting centres of northern India, and today most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work comes out of India rather than anywhere else. The weavers there work the classic traditional repertoire on cotton warps with a wool pile, and the folded-back photographs show what that means in practice: a tight, regular knot on the reverse, the pattern legible from the back, and no slack or wavy rows. If you are still deciding what you are buying, our guide to what separates a Oriental rug from other handmade categories is worth ten minutes. This one is a genuine room size, so it sits alongside our other 9x12 Oriental rugs, and at this density and condition it is a rug that will still be in service decades from now.
