9'3" x 13'4" Jaipur Rug | Traditional All Over Floral on Burgundy | Lustrous Wool, Brand New

This 9'3" x 13'4" rug was hand-knotted in Jaipur, India, and it is the kind of piece that explains why so much of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work now comes out of India. The weave is tight, the drawing is confident, and the wool has the glassy sheen you can see in the detail photos, where the apricot and gold leafwork almost reads as silk. It arrives brand new and never used, in perfect condition, and it is a true Oriental rug, knot by knot on a cotton foundation with hand-tied fringes at both ends. At roughly 123 square feet it covers a generous seating group or a full dining set, and it sits comfortably in the large area rug range. A certificate of authenticity is included with purchase.

Design and Motifs

The field is a classic all over floral composition with no central medallion, so the eye travels instead of stopping. Curling acanthus leaves and long split palmettes swing through the field in mirrored pairs, tied together by thin vines that drop small 8 petal rosettes and clusters of tiny blossoms at every junction. Look closely at image 12 and you can read the repeat: a dark rosette on a black cartouche at the center of each panel, flanked by fan-shaped flower heads and serrated leaves that alternate olive green, camel and salmon. The main border carries a different rhythm, a procession of large bent boteh paisleys and crowned palmettes on a black ground, framed inside and out by camel guard stripes filled with a running vine of rosettes, leaf sprays and small floral shields. Corners are properly resolved rather than cut off, a detail visible in the corner photographs and a reliable sign of careful graphing.

Burgundy, Black and Camel

The ground is a deep burgundy, closer to wine and black cherry than to tomato red, and it shifts slightly in the pile from one direction to the other, which is the abrash you expect from good hand-spun wool. Against it the palette is warm and deliberately antiqued: camel and apricot gold on the leaves and in the two guard stripes, olive and sage green on the stems and small leaf sprays, salmon and dusty rose on the flower heads, and a soft ivory used sparingly to pick out highlights. The main border reverses the scheme entirely, setting all of those colors on a near-black ground so the frame reads dark and heavy while the field stays glowing. A few petals hold a pale sky blue and a touch of rust orange, just enough to keep the repeat from feeling mechanical. Under lamplight the gold tones warm up noticeably; in daylight the greens come forward.

Jaipur Weaving and Build Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the major hand-knotting centers in India, and its workshops specialize in exactly this sort of large traditional floral on a cotton warp and weft with a wool pile. The knotting here is fine enough to draw a curved vine cleanly, which is the real test in an all over design, and the pile has been clipped at a medium height that leaves the motifs crisp while keeping the rug soft underfoot. The handle is dense and substantial, the selvages are firmly overcast, and the fringes are hand-tied and full, with no machine finishing anywhere. The folded and rolled views show a well-compacted back and a straight, even weave along both sides, with no bowing or waisting in a rug this long. New, unused, and built to be walked on for decades.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
