The field is a deep, even black, knotted in a fine lustrous dense wool that reflects light differently as you walk around it, so the gold and green flowers appear to lift off the surface. It is a full room size Oriental rug, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, heavy in the hand and completely unused, with clean cotton fringes at both ends and a firm, square selvage. Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Traditional Tabriz formula: a mirrored all over floral design with no central medallion, so the pattern reads the same from every seat in the room and forgives furniture placement. Large lotus palmettes and fan shaped rosettes sit on a network of thin gold vines, flanked by curling serrated leaves, small 6 petal blossoms and buds. The main ivory border repeats a big palmette and leaf cartouche, framed on both sides by a narrow rust guard stripe filled with tiny paired flowers, and a plain black outer band closes the rug at the edge. Look at the close-ups and you can see how cleanly the outlines are drawn, one knot wide in places, which is what keeps a curved vine looking curved rather than stepped.

The field is a true black, dense and unbroken, with no abrash or grey drift across the 12 foot length. Against it the palette runs warm: burnished gold and apricot in the palmette petals, soft sage and olive in the leaves, and deep burgundy and tomato red in the small blossoms, with occasional cool notes of pale teal and dove blue tucked into the flower hearts. The main border switches the balance completely, a soft cream to sand ivory ground that brightens the whole perimeter, with the rust guard stripes acting as a warm seam between light and dark.
