Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over composition with no central medallion, built from a repeating lattice of large serrated palmettes, open 8 petal rosettes, small four-petal blossoms and long curling boteh, all joined by leafy vines that arc from one motif to the next. Look closely at the close-up shots and the drawing is layered: each palmette is outlined in a darker shade, filled with two or three tones of gold and green, then finished with a pale cream highlight on the outer tips so the flower appears to lift off the ground. The wide main border repeats the theme in larger, more relaxed forms, big cloud-edged paisley and crowned palmettes set on ivory, with narrow guard stripes of small rosettes on soft green running inside and out.
