This is a room-defining piece: 212 inches long, hand-knotted in Jaipur in dense lustrous wool, and drawn in the classical Soltanabad idiom of scrolling vines and broad palmettes over a deep burgundy ground. It has never been used, and the pile still carries the full body and sheen you only get from good handspun wool on a cotton foundation. At 12' x 17'8" it belongs in the small group of oversize 12x18 rugs that can carry a great room, a long formal dining table or an open-plan main floor without looking undersized. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field is a true all over rug design, built from large curling leaf scrolls that spiral back on themselves, split palmettes opening like fans, and 8 petal rosettes anchoring the repeat at regular intervals. Between the big forms the weavers filled in tiny multi-headed flower sprays and serrated saz leaves, so the drawing stays busy at close range and reads as calm rhythm from across the room. The border system runs 3 bands deep: a wide main border of alternating turtle palmettes and star rosettes, flanked by a rust-toned reciprocal vine stripe and an outer guard of small paired blossoms, with a thin olive line separating each band. The corners resolve cleanly, which on a rug this long is a real test of the cartoon and of the weaver following it.

Color Palette

The ground is a deep burgundy that leans plum in flat overhead light and warms toward wine red under a lamp, which is exactly how a good wool pile should behave. Over it the vinework is worked in antique gold and soft wheat, with the larger palmettes shaded from olive green through moss into a dusty sage so the leaves have volume rather than sitting flat. Apricot and salmon pinks pick out the smaller blossoms and the reciprocal border stripe, and a clear rust orange runs along the guard bands to separate gold from burgundy. The main border reverses the field, setting gold and olive forms on the same burgundy ground, while the outer edge finishes in solid burgundy against ivory cotton fringe. It is a warm, low-contrast palette: nothing in it fights a walnut floor, a leather chair or a wood-paneled room.
