This 8' x 10'2" Jaipur rug is a new piece that has never been on a floor, hand-knotted in India on a cotton foundation with a dense, springy wool pile. The drawing follows the classical Mughal floral tradition: a burgundy field carrying a continuous scrolling vine, a wide dark navy border of large palmettes and round blossoms, and a camel guard stripe between them that keeps the two strong colors from fighting. At 96" by 122" it sits squarely in the most useful room size there is, large enough to carry a full seating group or a table with chairs pulled out. The wool has the slightly lustrous, waxy handle you get from good highland fleece, and the back photograph shows tight, even knotting with clean horizontal rows across the width. Design and Motifs

There is no medallion here. The field runs as a true all-over floral design, built on a lattice of thin dark vines that loop from edge to edge and hang a different flower at every junction. You can pick out broad sunflower palmettes with dark burgundy centers, flat rounded chrysanthemum discs in ivory and soft brown, spiral pinwheel rosettes whose petals turn like a wheel, tulip and lily forms, and tiny 4 lobed cruciform florets that fill the gaps. Long serrated acanthus leaves in olive lean across the scrolls and give the field its sense of movement. The main border repeats a strict rhythm on navy: a big radiating gold palmette, then a round artichoke style blossom, then the palmette again, all 4 corners resolved neatly rather than cut off. Flanking it are a camel inner guard of small meandering rosettes and an outer brick red guard of paired leaves and star flowers, finished with hand-tied ivory fringe.

A Burgundy Field Against Deep Navy

The ground is a burgundy that leans toward brick and terracotta, warm rather than purple, and it shifts slightly with the nap so one end of the rug reads a shade deeper than the other. Against it the main border is a very dark navy that reads close to black from a standing height and only opens up into blue when you kneel over it, as the border close-up shows. Between the two sits a camel and old gold guard stripe, the single lightest note in the rug and the reason the composition feels balanced instead of heavy. The flowers are drawn in gold, apricot, ivory and soft cocoa brown, outlined in the same dark navy as the border, while the foliage is a muted olive green with grey undertones. Small accents of deep wine red appear in the flower hearts and in the guard borders. It is a palette that sits comfortably with wood floors, leather, brass and warm white walls.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great living centers of hand-knotted weaving, and India is now where most of the world's finest contemporary hand-knotted work is produced. The city's workshops inherited the Mughal court repertoire of palmettes, vine scrolls and dense floral borders, and they still weave it by hand, knot by knot, on upright looms. This piece shows what that discipline delivers: even knot rows, straight selvages, a flat lie with no bowing along the 122" length, and a pile clipped low enough to hold the fine outlines on the smaller florets. It is a genuine Oriental rug in the proper sense of the term, and one of the more sensibly priced ways into a traditional floral in the popular 8 x 10 area rug size.
