Design and Motifs

Instead the weaver built the field from large lobed cartouches and curved vine arcs that link corner to corner, each arc outlined in a fine sage line and dotted with tiny beads that read almost like stitching. Inside those compartments sit split palmettes, serrated leaves, multi petal rosettes and small cypress and vase forms, with paired birds tucked into the lower field where the vine turns. The drawing is curvilinear throughout, which is the harder way to weave: every arc has to be stepped knot by knot so the eye still reads a smooth curve. The main border runs a gold ground with alternating shield shaped cartouches and flowering palmettes, and the inner and outer guards repeat a small running vine in burgundy and ivory. Corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning cleanly rather than being cut off, which is a mark of a drafted cartoon rather than an improvised copy. It is a traditional Oriental rug design executed with restraint, which is exactly why it settles into a furnished room instead of fighting it.

A Beige Field Warmed by Gold and Sage

The field is beige leaning to ivory, a warm sandy tone rather than a cool grey white, and it shifts slightly with the light across the length of the rug. Over that ground the vine tracery is a soft olive to sage green, muted enough to look aged from across the room and only resolving into distinct leaves up close. The flowerheads carry the accent color: deep burgundy and wine at the centers, dusty rose on the outer petals, small touches of pale slate blue, and occasional ivory highlights that keep the darker tones from going heavy.
