8' x 8' Round Jaipur Rug | Black All-Over Floral Field | Dense Hand-Knotted Wool, Brand New
A true 8' x 8' circle is harder to find than any rectangle, and this one is drawn properly: the floral repeat radiates out from the exact center so the pattern stays balanced no matter which side you walk in from. The piece is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with a firm, short, dense pile that stands up under a round dining table or a center hall pedestal. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, with crisp selvages, full ivory fringe and no wear anywhere in the pile. Every rug we ship carries our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
The field carries no medallion. Instead a continuous all-over lattice of thin vines links large serrated palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, curled cloud bands and small star flowers, with the whole repeat bent into concentric rings to suit the round format. A single small rosette sits at the dead center, and the motifs grow in scale as they travel outward so the drawing never looks crowded at the rim. The burgundy main border runs alternating broad palmettes and leafy sprays, framed on both sides by wide grey-lavender guard stripes filled with a meandering flowerhead vine, then narrow olive and black outline stripes that separate border from field. Close detail shots show tight outlining in black and ivory around each flower, which is what keeps the pattern legible against a dark ground.
Black Field, Burgundy Border and the Accent Palette
The ground is a deep, even black that reads closer to soft charcoal in daylight and goes almost ink dark under lamplight. Against it the weaver used a warm, slightly antiqued range: burgundy and wine red in the main border and in the vine stems, caramel and apricot gold in the palmette centers, olive and sage green in the leaves, cinnamon brown, dusty rose, pale lavender grey and small ivory highlights at the flower hearts. The grey-lavender guard borders are the quiet surprise, cooling the burgundy down and tying the whole circle back to grey stone or pale wood floors, as the photographs on tile show. Brown and green do most of the mid-tone work, so the rug sits comfortably with leather, walnut and brass rather than fighting them.
Jaipur Weaving and Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great working weaving centers of India, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. This piece shows why: hand-spun wool, a cotton foundation, clean knotting on the back and a round shape woven on the loom rather than cut down from a square, which is the detail that separates a real round from a trimmed one. The pile is clipped low and packed firmly, so the fine floral drawing holds its edges and the rug will not shed its detail with traffic. If you are weighing traditional Indian work against other sources, our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains how origin, weave and design language differ.
