10' x 13' Afghan Kilim Rug | Multicolor Tribal Diamond Lattice | Flat-Woven Wool

This is a large tribal kilim, hand-woven in wool with no pile at all, so the pattern you see on the front reads almost identically on the back. At 10' x 13' it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table without crowding the walls, which makes it one of the more practical proportions in our run of 10x13 rugs. The weave is tight and even, the selvedges are firm, and the grey wool fringe at both ends is full and untrimmed. Condition is perfect, with no wear, no repairs and no fading, and the piece ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a handmade wool flat-weave.

Design and Motifs

The field is a continuous lattice of stepped diamonds, drawn row by row across the full width so no two adjacent diamonds repeat the same palette. Each large diamond carries a serrated outline, a smaller diamond nested inside it, and a tiny hourglass or bowtie device at the center, while the gaps between the rows are filled with small ivory and gold triangles and single diamond dots. Some rows switch to hooked, comb-edged outlines that give the pattern an older nomadic feeling, a hallmark of village and tribal rugs woven from memory rather than a paper cartoon. Five distinct borders frame the field: a narrow blue inner band of diamond dots, a wide rust band of running hook and S figures, a green band of ivory cross and butterfly motifs, and a final rust outer band, with the whole composition kept perfectly square at the 4 corners.

A Full Spectrum on a Rust Red Ground

The ground tone that holds everything together is a warm rust red, close to brick, and it shows gentle abrash where the wool shifts a shade lighter across a given row. Against that red the diamonds run through forest and sage green, ivory and cream, deep turquoise and teal, soft lavender and lilac, mustard gold, denim blue, grey blue, apricot orange and small punches of claret burgundy at the centers. The upper and lower rows lean cooler, with pale blue and seafoam diamonds, while the middle of the field is hotter and more orange, so the rug reads as genuinely multi-colored rugs rather than one dominant color with accents. In practice it anchors a room of neutral walls and natural wood and will pick up almost any upholstery color already in the space.

Afghan Weaving and Flat-Weave Quality

Afghanistan is the leading source of serious hand-woven kilim work today, and this piece shows why: the wool is springy and lustrous, the weft is packed down hard so the surface feels dense rather than papery, and the slit-tapestry joins between color blocks are clean and straight, as the close detail photograph shows. A flat-weave of this kind has no knot count because there is no pile, so the quality measure is beat-down and the accuracy of the drawing, both of which are strong here. Weaving a kilim at 10 feet wide also means a very wide loom and two or more weavers working in step, which is why pieces this size are far less common than 6 or 8 foot kilims. As an Oriental rug it is light enough to move, reversible for even wear, and flat enough to sit under doors and dining chairs without catching.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
