2'7" x 21'8" Afghan Bokara Runner Rug | Red Field with Navy Gul Medallions | Brand New

A runner this long is not something a weaver takes on casually. This piece measures 2'7" x 21'8" in one continuous hand-knotted length, which means the loom was dressed for nearly 22 feet of uninterrupted work and the pattern had to hold true from the first row of knots to the last. The pile is 100% wool on a cotton foundation, the weave is tight and even, and the rug has never been on a floor: it was rolled, stored and photographed as you see it here. It is the sort of piece people hunt for when a long corridor has defeated every machine-made option in the catalog, and most hand-knotted runner rugs stop well short of this length. Every rug we ship, this one included, comes with our certificate of authenticity confirming it is handmade and hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

The field carries the classic Bokara layout: columns of octagonal guls, each one quartered by fine outlines and centered on a small cross, marching the full 21'8" of the rug in a steady repeat. Between the gul columns sit stepped cruciform sprays and tiny hooked leaves that keep the ground alive without crowding it. The borders do a lot of work on a narrow rug, and here there are several of them stacked tight: a wide main band of serrated palmette forms, flanked by reciprocal guard stripes, a small diamond and dot stripe, and a dark outer line that frames the whole length. Everything is drawn on the diagonal and the straight line, no curved vine anywhere, which is exactly what you want from a Turkoman-style design of this kind. The ends finish in plain red kilim bands and ivory fringe, visible in the corner and back photographs.

The Red and Navy Black Palette

The ground is a saturated true red, closer to tomato and claret than to pink, and it shifts slightly in the light because the wool takes the dye unevenly in the best way, giving faint horizontal abrash across the length. Outlining every gul and every border element is a very dark blue-black, which in the macro shots reads as navy rather than flat black and gives the pattern its crispness. Small ivory and cream knots punctuate the guls, the palmette border and the diamond stripes, and those pale dots are what stop the whole rug from reading as a single block of colour. The main border sits a shade deeper and browner than the field, so the eye registers a frame even from a distance. Overall this belongs squarely in the red and burgundy family and warms a dim passage immediately.

Afghan Weaving and the Bokara Tradition

The Bokara design travelled from the Turkoman tribes of Central Asia into northern Afghanistan, where village looms have been weaving it for generations and still do it by hand, knot by knot. Afghan wool is springy and high in lanolin, which is why the pile in these close-ups looks dense and slightly glossy and why a Bokara stands up to the kind of daily foot traffic a hallway delivers. This is a true Oriental rug in the proper sense of the term, hand-knotted on a village loom rather than produced on a machine, and the slight waver in the border lines over 21'8" is the honest signature of that process. For a long hallway, a gallery landing or a narrow corridor, a single unbroken runner of this length solves the problem no pair of short rugs ever will.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
