2'8" x 25'4" Khal Momadi Runner Rug | Tribal Diamond Medallions | Hand-Knotted Wool

At 2'8" x 25'4" this is a genuinely long runner, the kind of piece you buy because a corridor, a gallery landing or a straight upstairs hall measures out past 20 feet and nothing off the shelf will reach. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a short 3/8" pile, dense enough underfoot to take daily traffic without flattening, and the drawing runs unbroken from one end to the other rather than being pieced or repeated awkwardly at the join. The condition is perfect, the selvedges are tight and the fringes are even at both ends. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a hand-knotted, handmade piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The two full-length photographs were taken from a distance and read as a deep burgundy, while the close-up shots were taken under direct light and read as a brighter tomato red. The true color sits between the two: a saturated red field with navy, ivory and green detail. Nothing in the weave changes along the length of the runner.

Design and Motifs

The Khal Momadi drawing is built on a column of navy diamond medallions marching the full 25'4", each one framed in a fine ivory outline and centered on a single rosette. Between the medallions the field fills with hooked bracket frames, small 8 petal rosettes and paired green leaf sprigs, an all over rhythm that reads as ordered rather than busy because the same units repeat at a steady interval. The main border is a chain of navy cartouches on red, each holding a stepped cross and arrow motif, and it is flanked by narrow reciprocal sawtooth guard stripes in ivory and dark blue. Corners resolve cleanly, which is the mark of a weaver working from a set plan rather than improvising, and this disciplined tribal geometry places the piece squarely among geometric tribal rugs rather than the curvilinear floral schools.

A Deep Red Field With Navy, Ivory and Green

Red carries the whole runner. The field is a warm madder red that shifts with the light, cooling toward burgundy and wine when viewed down the length and opening up to a clear tomato red when you stand over it. Against that ground the medallions and border cartouches are worked in a very dark navy that reads almost black at a distance, and the contrast between the two is what gives the pattern its punch from across a hallway. Ivory does the fine work: single knot outlines around each diamond, the sawtooth guard stripes and small highlight squares inside the bracket motifs. The accents supply the rest of the palette, with rust and burnt orange rosettes, soft gold flecks, a warm brown in the flower heads and small clear green leaf forms scattered through the field. The whole thing sits comfortably with warm wood floors, brass and leather.

Khal Momadi Weaving in Pakistan

Khal Momadi, also spelled Khal Mohammadi, is a Turkmen tribal design named for the weaver credited with popularizing it, and today the best examples are produced by workshops in Pakistan that weave to a tighter, more even standard than the village originals. This is a fully hand-knotted Oriental rug, knotted one row at a time on a cotton warp and clipped short so the pattern stays crisp, and the weave is dense enough that the back shows the medallion outlines almost as sharply as the face. Consistency over a 25 foot length is the real test here: the medallions stay on center, the borders keep their width and the red does not drift from one end to the other, which means the wool was dyed in a single lot and the loom tension was held steady for months of work. For a hall that needs a runner this long, that consistency matters more than fineness.
