5'10" x 8'8" Chinese Oriental Rug | Traditional Ivory Medallion | Fine Weave Wool | New
At 5'10" x 8'8", this hand-knotted wool rug falls squarely into the most practical of all formats, the 6x9 Oriental rugs range, and it is drawn with far more discipline than the size usually buys. The field is a pale ivory, the medallion a deep burgundy, and the drawing is small in scale, with each scroll, bird and flower head outlined cleanly rather than blurred. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, the handle is firm but supple, and the ivory fringe at both ends is still crisp and untouched. It has never been used or laid in a home. A certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction ships with the rug.
Design and Motifs
The center holds an 8 petal rosette set inside a stepped, 8 sided medallion, with small dark cartouches framing it top and bottom and a pendant of split palmettes running out along the long axis. Around it the ivory field is filled with big curled arabesque scrolls, four to a quadrant, that read almost like cloudbands, and tucked into the vinework are paired winged bird figures, vases, serrated leaves and small rose heads. All 4 corners carry matching spandrels in tan with a dark brown cartouche at the inner point, so the field closes neatly instead of trailing off. The main border is a tan ground with a continuous floral meander, flanked by narrow dark guard stripes and an ivory outer stripe, a 5 band border system in total.
The Ivory, Tan and Burgundy Palette
The ground is a warm ivory, closer to clotted cream than white, which is what makes this one of the easier ivory and beige rugs to live with in a light room. Over it the scrollwork is worked in tan, camel and dusty rose, with the outlines stepping down into dark brown and near black so the pattern keeps its edge. The medallion and the corner cartouches are a deep burgundy, almost aubergine where the wool takes the dye heavily, and that single dark note anchors the whole field. Sage and olive greens appear as accents in the leaves and in the spandrel grounds, with small flicks of soft gold and pale blue in the flower centers. The border repeats the tan and rose in a lighter key, which keeps the eye traveling inward to the medallion.
Origin and Weaving Quality: Made in China
This piece was made in China, in the workshop tradition that weaves classical medallion and vine layouts to a tight, even knot count on a cotton foundation. If you want the full picture on how origin and terminology actually work, our guide on the difference between Persian and Oriental rugs is worth 5 minutes before you buy. What matters on the floor is the weave itself: the back shows small, regular knots in straight rows, which is why the curved vine lines and the tiny bird figures hold their shape instead of going jagged. The wool is clipped low and has a quiet sheen under light. Among finely woven Oriental rugs in this format, the drawing here is the reason to own it.
