This is a finely woven, hand-knotted Oriental rug measuring 8'7" x 11'6", made in China in the classic traditional idiom: a deep burgundy field, a black lobed medallion crowned with an ivory star, and three framing borders that keep the whole drawing under control. The pile blends wool with silk, and you can read the silk in the photographs as the light shifts across the field from one angle to the next, particularly in the pink roses and the pale outlines. The knot count is high enough that individual flower heads only 1 to 2 inches across are drawn with clean petals and shaded centers rather than blocky steps. Handle is soft but the weave is tight and the rug lies dead flat, which suits a formal room where it will be seen from every side. Design and Motifs

The center is an 8 petal ivory star rosette set inside a scalloped black medallion, ringed by two tiers of pink and cream blossoms and finished top and bottom with slender black pendants. Around it the burgundy ground reads as an allover floral field, a symmetrical sweep of thin vines carrying rosettes, lotus palmettes, tulips, small cypress-like sprays and curled cloudband tendrils, radiating outward from the medallion so the eye keeps traveling. All 4 corners hold large black spandrels filled with oversized palmettes and leafy scrollwork, which pulls the dark medallion color out to the edges. The main border is a linked chain of cartouches and shield-shaped panels on an olive and black ground, alternating diamond rosettes with bouquets, and it is fenced by ivory guard stripes carrying a fine meandering vine. Close inspection of the border corners, visible in the detail photograph, shows the design turning the corner cleanly instead of being cut off, a sign of a properly drawn cartoon.

A Burgundy, Black and Green Palette

The field is a deep burgundy, closer to aged wine than to a bright red, and it darkens toward plum where the silk catches the light at an angle. Against it the medallion and spandrels are a true black, which is what gives this rug its weight and its evening presence. The main border sits in a muted olive to sage green, the third color of the palette and the one that keeps the red and black from reading as heavy. Through both field and borders run salmon pink and rose flower heads, ivory and cream outlines, soft gold and ochre leafwork, and scattered blue grey accents in the smaller blossoms. Outer guard stripes are ivory, the fringe is natural cream and the selvage is overcast in burgundy.
