5'2" x 8'7" Persian Nain Rug | Wool & Silk All Over Lattice | Ivory, Blue & Burgundy
This is a 2000s wool and silk piece from Nain, still carrying its original factory back label and its full pile, with no wear, no repair and no restoration anywhere on the rug. The silk is used the way good Persian Nain rugs use it, as fine outlining around each flower and medallion so the drawing stays crisp and picks up light as you walk past. The handle is firm and thin on a cotton foundation, the ends finish in clean ivory fringe, and the sides are tight and straight. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over Persian rug design, a lattice of diamond compartments running the full 8'7" length with no central medallion to anchor it. Burgundy diamonds carrying a cream 4 lobed rosette alternate with sky blue diamonds filled with small vases, star flowers and leafy sprays, and the ivory ground between them is packed with tiny palmettes and curling tendrils. What makes this piece unusual is the border: instead of the plain vine most Nain weavers use, the wide ivory main border carries stepped geometric star medallions with hooked edges, the kind of drawing you normally see in tribal weaving, alternating with panels of dense small rosettes. That main band is framed on both sides by 4 narrow guard stripes in sky blue, camel and navy, giving the rug a layered, architectural frame around a very fluid field.
A Palette Built on Ivory, Sky Blue and Burgundy
The base is a warm ivory, closer to cream than white, which keeps the rug light without looking cold on a wood or stone floor. Over it sits a clear sky blue that fills roughly half the lattice compartments and reappears in the guard stripes, while deep burgundy carries the alternating diamonds and the small accent flowers scattered through the field. Green shows up as teal and sage foliage inside the blue compartments rather than as a block of color, and soft camel and tan run through the border ground and the flower centers. Navy handles the fine outlines and the star medallions in the border. The silk highlights sit mostly in the pale rosette centers and the tendrils, so those elements read a shade brighter than the wool around them depending on where you stand.
Nain, Central Persia, and the Weave
Nain sits in central Persia on the western edge of the great salt desert, about 100 miles east of Isfahan. The town spent generations weaving fine wool cloth for cloaks and only turned seriously to rug weaving in the 1930s, which is why Nain work looks nothing like village weaving: the weavers came to knotting already trained on very fine yarn. The house style that followed, an ivory or light blue ground, delicate floral drawing, silk outlining and a thin cotton foundation, is exactly what this 5'2" x 8'7" piece shows. The knotting is close and even across the whole field, the back is clearly legible motif for motif, and the pile is clipped low so the curves of the tendrils hold their shape. A rug of this weight and fineness sits flat, takes furniture without crushing, and is easily the kind of piece that stays in a family.
