5'7" x 8'10" Chinese Needlepoint Rug | Black Fruiting Vine All-Over Design | Excellent Condition
This 5'7" x 8'10" needlepoint rug is handmade in China in the European decorative tradition, and it reads like a piece of old tapestry rather than a modern floor covering. The surface is flat and tightly stitched, with no pile height at all, so the drawing of every pear, apple, grape cluster and leaf stays razor sharp against the deep black ground. At roughly 6x9 it is a true room-size piece that still works in a smaller sitting room, and the flat face means chairs and table legs glide instead of catching. The back shown in the last photograph reveals the cotton canvas ground and the ivory bound edge, the honest signature of hand needlepoint work. Condition is excellent throughout, with full even stitching and clean borders, and the rug ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is handmade. If you are shopping the 6x9 Oriental rugs range and want something that is not another medallion layout, this is the alternative.
Design and Motifs
The field carries no medallion and no central axis. Instead, slender vines climb the full length of the rug from the lower border, branching into fruit at every turn: fat pears, round apples and quinces, small bunched grapes, half-open blossoms with 5 petals, and broad serrated leaves that twist to show their undersides. The drawing is naturalistic rather than stylised, closer to a botanical plate than to a geometric repeat, and because the vines are staggered the all-over pattern never falls into an obvious grid. The border repeats the idea in miniature: a continuous garland of fruit and leaves on the same black ground, framed inside and out by narrow olive and gold guard stripes that give the whole composition a clean picture-frame edge. The close-up photographs show how each fruit is shaded through 3 or 4 tones of the same color to build roundness, which is the detail work that separates a good needlepoint from a flat printed look.
The Black Ground and Its Orchard Palette
The ground is a dense true black, matte and even, and it is the reason everything else glows. Against it the fruit runs through buttery ivory and pale cream, warm straw gold, soft peach and a dusty salmon pink that deepens almost to coral on the ripest apples. The foliage is worked in muted sage and grey-green with olive and bronze along the stems, a deliberately quiet green that keeps the pinks from turning sweet. Narrow bands of olive and antique gold outline the border, and the finished edge is bound in ivory. There is no bright white and no hard primary anywhere in the rug, which is why a piece from the black rugs family like this one sits comfortably with warm wood floors, as the parquet in these photographs shows, as well as with charcoal, cream or forest green upholstery.
Chinese Needlepoint Workshops and the Quality of the Stitch
Needlepoint is its own discipline. Rather than knotting pile onto warps, the weaver stitches wool yarn through an open cotton canvas, covering it stitch by stitch until the design is solid, which is the same method behind the French Aubusson and Savonnerie floor pieces this rug descends from. Chinese workshops took up that European vocabulary and have made the finest decorative needlepoint of the last several decades, with the patience and the hand control the technique demands, since a single room-size panel runs to hundreds of thousands of individual stitches and a miscount shows immediately. The result is thin, strong, reversible-looking and remarkably stable, with no shedding and nothing to crush flat. Understanding where a piece like this sits is easier once you know how an Oriental rug is classified by technique and origin, and in those terms this is a hand-stitched Chinese needlepoint in excellent order.
