Design and Motifs

The field is laid out as a coffered ceiling seen from below: 5 columns of square panels marching the full length of the rug, each one separated by raspberry bands filled with ivory laurel sprigs. Inside every square, 4 olive triangles spring from the corners toward the center and leave an ivory diamond behind them, and on that diamond sits a large layered rosette drawn in cream, ivory and soft taupe with a small ring of raspberry at its heart. The rosettes are not stamped copies of one another; the shading shifts from panel to panel, some reading as full-blown roses and others as spiky acanthus stars. Where the raspberry bands cross, a tiny ivory rosette buttons the grid together.
