5'9" x 8'9" Silk Oriental Rug | Tabriz Medallion Design | Ruby Red & Ivory | New, Never Used
This is a hand-knotted, all-silk Oriental rug measuring 5'9" x 8'9", woven in China to the classic Tabriz medallion drawing. Silk reads differently from wool: the pile throws light back, so the ruby red field shifts between deep garnet and bright cherry as you walk around it, which you can see in the difference between the flat overhead photo and the angled floor shots. The handle is thin, dense and cool, with a pile low enough that every outline in the drawing stays crisp. It has never been used, the ends and sides are intact, and the fringe is still full and straight. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its measurements and materials. At just under 6x9 it is a true formal room size, and buyers comparing options in this footprint can browse our full range of 6x9 rugs.
Design and Motifs
The layout is the textbook medallion and spandrel format, drawn with curved lines rather than angular ones. At the center sits a large 12 petal rosette medallion, each petal filled with its own small floral sprig and outlined in dark navy, with a sunburst of orange and ivory lanceolate leaves radiating out from the rim. Above and below it hang two ivory pendant cartouches, each carrying a single palmette. The field around the medallion is not open: it is covered edge to edge with a fine all-over tracery of thin vines, cloud band leaves, rosettes and tiny star flowers, which is what keeps a dark red ground from reading heavy. The 4 corner spandrels break away into pale cream and soft green, filled with scrolling split leaf arabesques that reach into the field in a lobed outline. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide ivory main border of alternating palmettes and flowering stems, flanked by salmon reciprocal stripes, then narrow light green and ivory guard stripes with repeating 4 petal rosettes, as seen in the close borderwork photos.
The Color Palette: Ruby Red, Ivory and Soft Green
The field is a ruby red that leans toward wine and garnet in the shaded photos and toward clear cherry red where the light strikes the pile directly. Against it, the vinework is drawn in ivory, cream and pale butter yellow, with scattered accents of apricot, rust orange, dusty rose and a cool dove grey that appears inside the medallion petals and in a few of the field rosettes. The medallion itself is the lightest area of the rug, built from ivory, soft grey blue and pale gold, so it lifts clearly off the red. Borders are ivory with warm sand and salmon tones, and the guard stripes carry a distinctive pistachio green that repeats in the spandrel foliage, tying the corners to the border. Black navy outlining runs through the whole drawing and sharpens every flower head. The selvage and the fringe line show a warm copper rust edge, visible in the folded corner photograph. Shoppers working in this family of tones can also compare other red and burgundy rugs.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This piece was woven in China, in the workshop tradition that specialises in fine silk on silk pile rugs. The Tabriz medallion format it follows is one of the most demanding layouts in Oriental weaving, because the curved vine and the lobed medallion outline only resolve properly at a high knot count. The back of the rug, shown with the tape measure, tells the real story: the knot nodes are small and evenly spaced, the design is legible from the reverse, and the horizontal lines of the weft run straight with no drawn-in waist. That density is also why the pile sits low and the outlines stay sharp instead of blurring. The combination of a silk foundation and a silk pile makes the rug light in the hand for its size, flexible, and unusually reflective underfoot, and it is the reason this format of silk rugs is often used in low traffic formal rooms, under a bed, or displayed on a wall rather than in a hallway.
