6'2" x 8'11" Pakistani Chobi Peshawar Rug | Wool | Light Blue

A hand-knotted rug measuring 6'2" x 8'11", knotted in Pakistan with a wool pile. The field is a light blue that carries a faint grey-green cast in daylight, covered edge to edge with palmettes, rosettes and leafy vine in beige and gold, and held inside a broad ivory border. At 6'2" x 8'11" it sits at the upper end of the 4x6 to 6x9 range, large enough to carry a sofa and a low table, as the room photograph shows.

Design

The Chobi Peshawar drawing here is an all-over floral rather than a medallion layout. A thin ivory vine runs through the field in long curves, hanging serrated palmettes, open eight-petalled rosettes and small split leaves off its branches, with a pair of large cusped blossoms set on the centre line and quartered flowerheads filling the corners. The wide main border repeats a serrated leaf and rosette in tan and gold on ivory, outlined in dark brown, and is flanked by narrow guard stripes of small four-petalled flowers linked by a fine stem. The rectangular format is close to square-shouldered, and the pattern meets the border cleanly on all four sides.

Colour

The ground is a light blue with enough grey in it to read as slate from a distance, and the close photographs show it striating gently from one row of knots to the next, so the field is never flat. Against it the ornament is worked in wheat gold, apricot tan, cream and ivory, with brown outlining that gives the leaves their edge and a few small notes of soft green and pale turquoise inside the palmette hearts. The border is the lightest part of the rug, a warm beige and ivory that lifts the cooler field without any sharp contrast.

Making

Hand-knotted in Pakistan with a wool pile, cut at a medium height that keeps the brown outlines crisp, as the rolled-back corner shows. The reverse is clearly legible, each motif reading through the foundation, and the ends finish in plain white cotton fringe with a blue-grey selvedge down the sides. The rug is new and in new condition.
