7'8" x 10'9" Pakistani Chobi Peshawar Rug | Wool | Tan and Green

A hand-knotted rug from Pakistan measuring 7'8" x 10'9", with a pile of natural wool on a tan ground. The field is covered edge to edge with curling leaves and open flowers, and the whole drawing is held inside a pale green main border. At a distance it reads as one warm sand colour with detail worked into it rather than as a pattern of strong contrasts, and only at close range do the violet, teal and peach flower heads separate out.

The design

This is a Chobi Peshawar drawing in its floral all-over form, with no medallion and no corner pieces. Long serrated acanthus leaves curl back on themselves across the field, each one carrying a cluster of rosettes and small budded sprays on thin stems, and the repeat is set symmetrically about the long axis of this rectangular format so that the pattern meets the border cleanly on all four sides. The main border runs a mirrored sequence of broad leaves and flat palmettes, bracketed by narrow guard stripes: a running flower chain on the inside and a fine barber-pole line in salmon and blue on the outside, visible in the close border photographs.

The colour

The ground sits between sand and light camel, an ivory and beige tone that lightens slightly toward the centre where the pile has caught the light. Against it the flowers are picked out in lavender, dusty rose, peach, pale yellow and ivory, with the outlines drawn in a dark teal that does most of the work of holding the shapes together. The border is a soft celadon green, cooler than the field and lighter in value, with ivory and brown-olive leaves lying across it; the thin pink line between field and border is the only warm accent at full strength anywhere in the rug.

The making

The rug is hand-knotted in Pakistan with a pile of natural wool, in the manner of other hand-knotted rugs made in and around Peshawar. The pile is clipped low and evenly, so the fine outlining in the flower heads stays legible, and the fold shown in the photographs holds its shape without stiffness. The table records the rug as new and the condition as perfect, with full pile across the field and borders and plain cream fringe at both ends.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
