8'2" x 9'9" Pakistani Chobi Rug | Wool | Beige and Sage Green

A hand-knotted Chobi carpet from Pakistan, 8'2" x 9'9", with a pile of natural organic wool. The field is a pale sand beige carrying an all-over pattern of palmettes and leafy rosettes on thin dark vines, and the main border sits a shade or two darker in olive tan. Seen from across a room it reads as one quiet neutral; up close the drawing is dense and the small red and pale blue flower centres come forward.

Design

The field pattern repeats without a medallion: large lobed palmettes and serrated-leaf rosettes linked by a fine brown vine that curves into near-circles between the larger flowers, with small buds, four-petal florets and tiny leaves filling the gaps. The repeat is mirrored down the centre line, so matching pairs of flowers face each other across the width. The main border alternates an upright palmette with a looser spray of flowers and serrated leaves, and is held between narrow guard stripes, one carrying a running wave in red, the outer ones a steady run of rosettes and small arrowhead sprigs. The rectangular format is close to square in proportion for its length.

Colour

The ground is a soft beige, closer to raw wool than to white, and it bands lightly across the width where the wool takes the dye unevenly. Against it the flowers are drawn in sage green and a dull gold, outlined in brown, with clear rust-red used sparingly in the flower centres, the border sprigs and the wave of the inner guard. Small touches of pale blue-grey appear in the leaves and in the border palmettes. The border ground is a deeper tan-olive than the field, which gives the rug an edge without introducing a strong contrast anywhere.

Making

Hand-knotted in Pakistan with a wool pile on a cotton-coloured foundation, the back shows an even, moderately fine knot across the whole piece and flat-woven ends finished with plain fringe. The rug is new and unused, so the pile stands full and the colours are as they left the loom. It is one of the hand-knotted rugs we stock in the 6x9 to 8x10 range, a size that covers a standard dining table with chairs pulled back.
