8'2" x 9'6" Pakistani Ziegler Rug | Wool | Beige and Brown

A hand-knotted rug measuring 8'2" x 9'6", knotted in Pakistan with a wool pile. The field is a soft mid-brown, nearer camel than chocolate, carrying an all-over floral drawing in ivory and pale gold, and it is held inside a wide sand-coloured border. Contrast across the whole piece is deliberately low, so from standing height the pattern reads as texture before it reads as flowers.

Design

The Chobi drawing here is a Ziegler all-over: a loose lattice of thin vines running corner to corner, hung with broad serrated palmettes, eight-petalled rosettes and long lanceolate leaves. Nothing is centred, there is no medallion, and the repeat shifts slightly from one row to the next, so the two halves of the field do not mirror each other exactly. A single larger blossom sits on the vertical axis at each end, outlined in apricot. The main border alternates a frontal rosette with a pair of curling leaves, set between narrow guard stripes of small running blossoms, and the pattern turns the corners without being forced to match.

Colour

The field is a warm brown that lightens towards biscuit where the pile catches light, and the border steps up into a pale beige close to undyed wool. Motifs are picked out in ivory and a dull gold that sits only a shade or two off the ground, with thin outlines of apricot and soft rust on a few of the rosettes, the one real accent in the rug. A handful of leaves carry a cool grey-green that keeps the warm tones from going flat. Abrash runs in faint horizontal bands across the field, visible in the full-length photographs.

Making

Hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with the knotting regular enough that the pattern stays legible on the reverse, as the folded corner shows. The pile is close cut, the selvedges are overcast in matching wool and the ends finish in plain white fringe. The rug is new and in perfect condition, rectangular, and lies flat without ripple in the floor shots.
