8' x 10'2" Pakistani Ziegler Rug | Wool | Beige and Brown

This hand-knotted rug measures 8' x 10'2" and was knotted in Pakistan with a pile of natural wool. The field is a pale gold beige that turns close to apricot where the light runs along the pile, filled edge to edge with flower heads and thin scrolling vines, and it is closed in by a wide border of soft brown. It is a rectangular rug with no medallion, so the pattern reads as one continuous surface from one end to the other.

The design

The field carries an all-over Ziegler pattern: large spiked rosettes and open lotus palmettes set on a loose lattice of hairline vines, with serrated leaves, small carnations and budded stems filling the spaces between them. The drawing is mirrored across the long axis, so each large rosette on the left has a partner on the right, and a single dark brown star sits at the centre of the rug where the two halves meet. The main border runs cream rosettes in profile against the brown ground, alternating with oval cartouches held between curling acanthus leaves; a narrow gold band of linked vinework guards it on both sides, and the corners turn cleanly with the cartouche repeated at the angle.

The colour

Three tones do the work. The ground is a warm beige that lifts towards honey in the open areas and stays pale where the wool has taken the least colour. Against it the border is a muted brown with a faint mauve cast, deep enough to frame the field without weighing it down. The flowers are drawn in gold and rust orange, with darker brown outlines and occasional touches of soft grey blue in the leaves and buds, which keeps the pattern legible on a ground so close to its own palette.

The making

The rug is hand-knotted in Pakistan with a pile of natural wool on a cotton foundation, finished with plain ivory fringes at both ends. The back shows the pattern clearly through the knots, and the pile has the slight sheen that shows in the rolled photograph. The table records it as new and in perfect condition.
