9' x 11'7" Pakistani Ziegler Rug | Wool | Khaki and Ivory

A 9' x 11'7" Ziegler knotted in Pakistan in natural wool, with a khaki field and a wide ivory border that carries most of the drawing. Seen from above it is almost monochrome, a warm grey-brown ground with pale vines running through it, and only the small coral outlines in the flower heads break the quiet. The rectangular format and the flat, even pile make it a rug that reads as texture first and pattern second.

Design

The field is an all-over lattice of thin vines linking large serrated palmettes, drawn in ivory with a coral tracery inside each centre. Between them sit smaller rosettes, split leaves and a scattering of squared, hook-sided motifs that look almost like little architectural brackets, a detail the close-up photographs show clearly. There is no medallion and no centre; the pattern simply repeats and runs off under the border, which is the usual Ziegler treatment. The main border is a broad ivory band of angular leaf scrolls and eight-lobed rosettes, some outlined in the same coral, and it is framed by narrow khaki guard stripes on both edges.

Colour

The ground is khaki, a brown with grey and olive in it that shifts toward camel where the light crosses the pile and toward mushroom where it does not. Against that, the vines and palmettes are drawn in ivory and a faint straw yellow, so the contrast stays low. The sage green appears mostly in the border leaves, muted to a soft grey-green that sits close to the grey tones in the field. The coral and salmon outlines are the one warm note, thin enough that they register as an edge rather than a colour block.

Making

Hand-knotted in Pakistan on a cotton foundation, with a natural wool pile clipped low and even. The back, shown folded over in one photograph, is regular across the width, and the border corners resolve cleanly where the leaf scroll turns. The rug is new and in perfect condition, with full pile, intact selvedges and short ivory fringe at both ends.
