6'2" x 9'4" Persian Rug | Emerald Green Floral Medallion | Ivory & Red Borders | Excellent Condition
Green grounds are the exception in Persian weaving, not the rule, and this one carries the color with real authority. The field is a deep emerald, densely covered in a flowering vine scroll, with a round ivory and sky blue medallion floating in the center and a wide claret red border framing the whole piece. The wool is finely spun and clipped short at 3/8", which is what keeps the small blossoms and thin stems legible right down to the individual petal, and the pile has the quiet sheen good highland wool develops once it has been sheared low. Hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, this is a true room-size piece at 6 x 9 Persian rug proportions, suited to a seating area, a dining table or a primary bedroom. Condition is excellent throughout, the ends and selvages are sound, and every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The layout is the classic curvilinear city format, drawn with a light hand rather than a heavy one. A round medallion sits at the center, built up in concentric rings: a small red rosette core, a taupe cartouche ring, a band of blue palmettes and a scalloped ivory outline, with a burgundy cloud collar spreading behind it. Above and below the medallion are matching red and rose pendant finials. Each of the 4 corners carries an ivory spandrel filled with roses and serrated leaves, and the space between is worked as a continuous all-over vine: thin red stems arcing across the green, carrying palmettes, lotus heads, small 5 petal blossoms and slender lanceolate leaves, mirrored left to right along the central axis. The main border is a red ground with alternating palmettes and rosette clusters, flanked by a light blue floral guard on each side and finished with an ivory outer band of bouquets and scrolling arabesque. The reverse shown in the detail photos reveals how tightly the knots are packed, with the pattern reading almost as clearly from the back as from the pile side.
A Deep Green Field With Red, Ivory and Blue
The dominant color is a dark bottle green that shifts toward emerald where the light catches the pile and toward near-black in the shadows, which gives the field depth instead of flatness. Against it, the drawing is worked in a warm, slightly muted palette: claret and brick red in the palmettes and border ground, soft ivory and cream in the spandrels and medallion outline, powder blue through the guard stripes and flower heads, dusty rose and salmon in the petals, camel and taupe in the arabesque scrollwork, and sage in the leaves. The blue is the detail that makes this rug work in a modern room, because it cools the red down and keeps the green from reading heavy. Ivory end panels and cream fringe bracket the composition at the top and bottom, and a pale green outer selvage line wraps the edge. For anyone shopping deliberately for green Persian rugs, a field this saturated and this evenly dyed is uncommon.
Persian Weaving and Workshop Quality
This is workshop weaving rather than village work. The symmetry across the center line, the unbroken flow of the vine scroll through the corners, and the way the border turns cleanly at each corner all point to a rug woven from a full cartoon on a properly tensioned loom, with a master overseeing the color changes. That level of drawing only becomes possible at a high knot count, because a curved stem drawn coarsely turns into a staircase of steps; here the arcs stay smooth. The cotton warp and weft give the piece a flat, stable handle that will lie without buckling, and the short wool pile means the pattern will stay crisp under years of traffic rather than blurring. Woven in Persia and finished in the traditional way, with hand-knotted ends and hand-wrapped selvages, it is a rug built to be used daily and still look this way decades from now.
