10'5" x 15'5" Persian Rug | Red Floral Medallion Field | Ivory Border, Excellent Condition

This is a full room piece, 10'5" x 15'5" of hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, drawn in the classic Persian formula of a single star medallion floating on a red field that is completely filled with flowering vine. At just over 15 feet long it belongs with the genuinely oversize Persian rugs, the format that finally makes a large living room or a long dining room read as one finished space instead of several. The pile is full and even across the whole field, the ivory main border has kept its clean tone, and the selvedges and fringe are intact, which is why the condition reads Excellent. Design and Motifs

The center holds an 8 point star medallion built from a small rosette core, a ring of pale blue lobes and outward rays that step into the field rather than sitting on top of it. Above and below it sit matching pendants, and the 4 corners carry navy spandrels outlined in ivory tracery. What lifts this one above an ordinary medallion layout is the field itself: a continuous, unbroken system of thin ivory vines that loops across the whole red ground, carrying lotus palmettes, curled saz leaves, small rosettes and buds. The drawing is fully curvilinear, so the vines turn in real arcs with no angular shortcuts, and the repeat is balanced left to right without ever looking mechanically mirrored. The main border runs a wide ivory ground with alternating palmettes and feathered navy leaves, framed on both sides by narrow celadon and red guard stripes that give the whole composition a crisp edge where it meets the floor.

A Deep Red Field Cooled by Ivory and Celadon

Red is the governing color, a warm tomato to cherry red with just enough depth to stay formal rather than bright, and the close-up photograph shows how the wool takes the dye unevenly in the best way, with subtle shifts of tone from row to row that only handspun wool and natural dyeing produce. Against it, ivory does most of the work: the vine scroll, the flower heads and the whole main border are ivory to soft cream, and that contrast is what keeps a field this large from reading heavy. Navy blue anchors the corners, the guard stripes and the feathered leaves. The most distinctive note is the soft celadon blue seen in the medallion, in scattered palmettes and in the narrow inner stripes, a pale gray green blue that cools the red and gives the rug its slightly aged, antique palette. Touches of gold, camel, olive green and a dusty rose appear inside individual blossoms, so the surface changes character depending on where you stand and how the light falls.

Persian Weaving and Build Quality

A rug of this width is loom work, not a village project. Weaving 125 inches across means a wide upright loom, a full cartoon drawn by a designer and several weavers working the same row for years, which is exactly how the Persian workshop tradition produces balanced curvilinear medallion rugs at room scale. The foundation is cotton, chosen because it stays dimensionally stable over a span this long and keeps the rug lying flat, and the pile is wool, densely packed and clipped at a medium height so the fine ivory vine lines stay legible. The reverse, shown with a ruler in the last photograph, is clean and regular, with the knot rows tight enough to read the border design clearly from the back, the standard test for an honest hand-knotted piece. Handled sensibly and rotated every few years, a rug built like this outlasts the room it is bought for.
