6'6" x 9'6" Persian Tabriz Rug | Cream Field with Light Blue Floral Medallion | Pale Palette, 2000s
Most Tabriz rugs shout. This one whispers. Woven in the 2000s on a cotton foundation with a hand-knotted wool pile, this 6'6" x 9'6" Persian Tabriz rug takes the classic court medallion layout of northwest Persia and renders it entirely in cream, light blue, beige and a faint breath of pale peach, so the drawing reads as texture more than as contrast. The pile is even and full with no thin spots, the selvages are tight and the fringe is clean and original, which is what you expect from a piece in perfect condition. At a hair under 7 by 10 feet it slots into the most useful size class in the house, and every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted in Persia.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first catalog photograph was shot under different lighting and reads darker and greener than the rug actually is. The showroom photographs taken on the tile floor are the accurate ones: the field is a clean warm cream and the drawing is a soft light blue. Nothing about the rug has faded or changed color; it is purely a difference in camera and lighting.
Design and Motifs
The center of the field carries a lobed 8 petal rosette medallion built up in concentric rings of small blossoms and leaf work, with a fine pendant reaching toward each end. Around it the open cream ground is filled with a curvilinear vine that carries palmettes, half palmettes, rosettes, small tulip heads and feathered leaves, drawn in the flowing Tabriz manner rather than the angular village style. Four corner spandrels repeat the medallion vocabulary at a larger scale, each anchored by a broad blossom cluster and a sweeping scroll. The framing is a triple border: a wide main band of arabesque scrollwork and blossoms flanked by two narrow guard stripes of running vine, with a fine reciprocal line separating field from border. Because the whole composition is worked in close tones, the pattern shifts as you walk around it, showing more or less of the drawing depending on the light.
The Cream, Light Blue and Pale Peach Palette
The field is cream, warm rather than stark white, and it carries a faint beige haze through the center where the wool takes the light differently. Every motif is outlined in light blue, ranging from a soft dove blue in the vine work to a slightly deeper cornflower in the flower centers and the small accents scattered across the ground, which are the only points of real saturation in the rug. Pale peach ghosts through the spandrels and the main border, giving the corners a hint of warmth against the cooler blues, and ivory highlights inside the medallion and the palmettes lift the drawing off the ground. This is a rug for rooms built on beige and ivory tones, oak floors, linen upholstery and white walls, where a red medallion rug would take over and this one simply settles in.
Tabriz: The Workshop City of Northwest Persia
Tabriz sits in the far northwest of Persia and has been a weaving capital since the Safavid period, the city where the cartoon-driven workshop system, the curved line and the formal medallion layout were refined into a house style that the rest of the country later copied. Tabriz weavers measure fineness in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches, and they work on a taut cotton warp with a hook-ended knife that lets them follow a designer's drawing exactly. You can see that discipline here in the symmetry of the medallion, the unbroken sweep of the border scroll and the way the corner spandrels resolve cleanly at all 4 corners. The wool is well spun and densely packed, so the pile stands up to traffic, and a piece of this weight at 7x10 Persian rug proportions will hold a seating group or a dining table without crowding either.
