6'8" x 10' Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Floral Field & Coral Red Border | Fine Wool Pile
This is a classic town-woven Tabriz in the size most American rooms actually need. The rug measures 6'8" x 10', it is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, and it dates to the 2000's, so the pile still stands full and the colors have only just begun to settle. The ivory field carries a dense floral tracery around a rose red medallion, and the coral red main border pulls the whole composition together without letting it go dark. Condition is excellent: clean sides, even pile, original finished ends with intact fringe. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction, and one comes with this Tabriz.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is a full curvilinear medallion layout, the format Tabriz workshops have refined for generations. At the center sits a lobed rose red medallion built out in tiers: an 8 petal rosette on a teal blue disc, a ring of cream cartouches filled with small red blossoms, then a scalloped outer edge that throws pendants north and south. The ivory ground around it is not left quiet. It is filled edge to edge with curled saz leaves, split palmettes, carnations, tulip sprays and thin vine scrolls that mirror across both axes, with quartered medallion elements anchoring the 4 corners. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a broad coral red main border of alternating grey-blue palmettes and standing floral bouquets, flanked by narrow reciprocal trefoil guards and a rosette-and-vine minor stripe in navy. Look closely at the field and small scattered motifs appear inside the larger ones, which is the detail level that separates a workshop Tabriz from a village copy of the same idea.
The Ivory, Coral Red and Blue Palette
The field reads as a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to stark white, with faint sandy abrash drifting through the lower half where the wool took the dye a shade differently. Against it the weaver worked a wide red range: the medallion in a deep rose to raspberry, the border in a bright coral red, and small accents in true scarlet and dusty pink. Cooling that warmth are indigo and navy blues in the guard stripes, the tiny four-petal flowers and the leaf tips, plus a soft grey-blue used for the large border palmettes. Olive and moss greens run through the leaves, with touches of gold, apricot and chocolate brown in the smaller blossoms. Because the ground is light, this rug brightens a room rather than weighing it down, and it sits comfortably on pale oak, walnut or stone floors. Anyone shopping the 7 x 10 Persian rugs range for a lighter alternative to the usual red-ground medallion piece should start here.
Tabriz Weaving and Quality
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and is the oldest continuously working weaving city in the country, the place where the Turkish knot on a cotton foundation was industrialized into a genuine workshop tradition. Tabriz weavers count fineness in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 in, and they work from a cartoon drawn by a professional designer rather than from memory, which is why the curved vine work here stays true across 10 feet without wandering. The back photograph shows the knotting straight, tight and regular, with clean color separation on the reverse and no glue or added backing, all marks of a properly finished city piece. The wool is the firm, slightly lustrous northwest Persian stock that takes a light shear and holds it, so the pile stands up to real traffic. Selvedges are wrapped and secure and the ends are woven flat with their original knotted fringe, meaning this Tabriz has years of service left before it needs anything at all.
