This is a formal, workshop-drawn Persian Tabriz rug measuring 7'7" x 10', hand-knotted in fine wool with silk highlights over a cotton foundation. It has never been on a floor: the pile stands full and even edge to edge, the selvedges are tight, and the ivory cotton fringe is clean and uncut at both ends. At 7'7" x 10' it sits squarely in the most useful room size there is, working the way most buyers shopping 8x10 Persian rugs intend, with the front legs of seating on the rug and a dining table fully contained. Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic Tabriz medallion formula drawn at close range. A round ivory medallion sits dead center, filled with a small rosette core ringed by scrolling vine and tiny five petal blossoms, then framed by a black halo carrying open roses and serrated leaves. Radiating out from that halo, the burgundy field fills with a dense mesh of hooked vines, rosebuds, palmettes and lanceolate leaves, all drawn on a curved line rather than an angular one. Four large spandrels in sage and cream anchor the corners with heavier flower clusters and cloudband scrolls. The main border repeats a black ground with alternating rose sprays and acanthus curls, flanked by ivory guard bands of linked rosettes. Both halves of the field mirror precisely, which is the mark of a drawn cartoon followed knot by knot.

A Burgundy Field Framed in Black, Ivory and Sage

The field is a deep wine burgundy that reads almost black-cherry in low light and warms toward true red where the light rakes across the pile, as in the close-up shots. Against it, the palette is unusually soft for a red rug: salmon and dusty rose flowerheads, powder pink buds, cream and ivory outlining, and a muted sage green through the leafwork and the corner spandrels. The medallion center is a pale ivory going to blush, the lightest note on the rug and the reason the eye lands there first. The main border is a true deep black, which is what gives the burgundy its snap and keeps the whole piece formal rather than busy. Silk highlights through the flowerheads catch the light and shift tone as you walk around the rug.

Tabriz Weaving and Quality

Tabriz, in northwest Persia, has been the country's most technically disciplined weaving city for centuries, and its reputation rests on drawing: the curved vine, the true circle, the flower that keeps its shape at small scale. None of that is possible without a high knot count, and the detail visible in the medallion and guard borders here shows a fine, tightly packed weave. The back photo shows crisp, regular knotting with no crowding or slack rows, and the rug lies flat with no cupping. The pile is fine wool with silk worked into the highlights for sheen, over a cotton foundation that gives the piece the stability to hold its rectangle for decades.
