A rug woven in the 2000s that has never been laid on a floor is an unusual thing to find at this size, and that is exactly what this piece is. The pile still stands full and even, the ivory ground has no traffic shading, and the silk highlights throw light the way they did the day the rug came off the loom. The wool is fine and tightly packed at approximately 400 knots per square inch, with silk used selectively through the flowers and the vine work so that the drawing reads sharp rather than soft. Design and Motifs

The field is a classic Tabriz composition: a small, densely drawn central medallion on a deep indigo ground, ringed by a scalloped coral surround and a halo of rosettes and cusped cartouches that radiates outward like a sunburst. Around it the ivory field is filled edge to edge with flowering vine, palmettes, serrated leaves and small paired blossoms in the all over floral manner, with two axial pendants above and below the medallion and four corner spandrels in a soft camel tone that frame the field without interrupting it. Detail at this scale only holds together at a high knot count: individual petals are outlined, the arabesque tendrils curve rather than step, and the 8 petal rosettes in the border stay round. The main border runs a coral ground with reciprocal palmettes and scrolling split-leaf vine, flanked by pale green guard stripes carrying a running flower head repeat, and the narrow outer stripes finish the rug in ivory and green.

The dominant tone is a warm, slightly creamy ivory, not a cold white, which keeps the rug easy to live with against oak, walnut or pale stone. Against it the palette is unusually broad for a Tabriz of this type: brick coral and terracotta in the border and the medallion surround, sage and bottle green through the guard stripes and the leaf work, indigo blue at the medallion ground and in small outlines, and quieter supporting notes of camel, rose pink, dusty mauve, olive and ochre scattered through the blossoms. Because much of the fine detail is worked in silk, the coral and green shift noticeably with the light and with the direction you walk, reading deeper from one end and brighter from the other. This is the appeal of wool and silk Persian rugs: the wool carries the body and the silk carries the light.

Tabriz, and What 400 Knots Means There

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's workshop city for centuries, the place where court-level drawing was translated into rugs that could be produced to a standard rather than by accident. Tabriz weavers count fineness in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 in, and roughly 400 knots per square inch corresponds to the 60 Raj grade that the town treats as collector work rather than commercial production. Forty Raj is the everyday weave, 50 is fine, and this rug sits a clear step above both: you can see it on the reverse, where the knot nodes are small and regular and the design stays legible from the back. The foundation is cotton, which keeps a 10 x 13 piece flat and true, and the pile is cropped low so none of the drawing is lost in the wool.
