6'8" x 6'10" Persian Sarough Square Rug | All Over Floral Navy Field | 2000s Excellent Condition
A square rug is one of the hardest formats to find in authentic handmade work, and this one measures 6'8" x 6'10", close enough to true square that it sits dead centre under a round table or in a boxy sitting room without a sliver of floor showing on one side. It is a hand-knotted Persian Sarough rug from the 2000's, woven with a tightly clipped 3/8" wool pile on a cotton foundation, and the back photo shows the clean, even knotting and straight selvedges you want to see before you buy. Condition is excellent, the handle is firm with plenty of pile left, and every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The faint vertical line visible in the full-view photos is a fold shadow from rolled and stacked storage. It is not wear, not fading and not damage. It relaxes out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The navy field carries a mirrored all over floral design built around a small 4 pointed lozenge at the exact centre, filled with an 8 petal rosette and outlined in ivory. From that centre the drawing opens into four matching quadrants: large crowned palmettes, vases of upright blossoms, drooping sprays of bell flowers hung in neat rows of 3 and 4, pinwheel rosettes and fine feathered leaves on dark blue stems. Each corner of the field is anchored by a big bracketed split leaf arabesque, almost architectural in the way it frames the quadrant, and ivory cloud-band tendrils run diagonally toward the centre to tie the whole field together. The main border is a procession of 8 petal star rosettes alternating with small shield cartouches, flanked by several narrow guard stripes of running vine and a fine serrated inner line. The drawing is symmetrical on both axes, which is exactly why the square format reads so calmly: whichever way you walk into the room, the rug looks the same.
Colors in Detail
The ground is a deep ink navy blue, close to black in low light and opening up to a true midnight tone when daylight crosses the pile. Against it the florals are drawn in a warm salmon-tinted rust and a deeper brick red, with the main border taking that same rust as its ground so the field reads as a dark inner panel set in a warm frame. Ivory and soft beige do the outlining work, lighting the edges of the palmettes, the centre lozenge and the border rosettes. Secondary colours fill in the detail: a muted sage and olive green in the leaves and stems, a clear light blue and teal in the rosette centres and the guard stripes, a few touches of caramel brown and pale peach in the smaller blossoms, and small black-brown accents at the heart of the larger flowers. The palette is traditional and slightly dusty rather than bright, which makes it easy to live with next to brown leather, walnut and warm wood floors.
Sarough Origin and Weaving Quality
Sarough is a weaving district in west central Persia, in the Markazi region around Arak, and it has supplied the American market with heavy, floral, hard-wearing rugs for more than a century. The Sarough recipe is consistent: a strong cotton foundation, a dense symmetrically knotted wool pile sheared low, curvilinear floral drawing taken from the classical repertoire, and a weight in the hand that tells you the rug was built to take traffic. This piece follows that tradition closely. The knotting is regular across the whole width, the design holds its symmetry corner to corner, and the low clip keeps the palmettes and bell flowers crisp instead of blurring them. Square looms are less common in the villages because they are harder to set up and harder to sell, so a well drawn Sarough at 6'8" x 6'10" is a genuinely useful find for a square room, a landing or a round dining table, and it is the kind of weave that will still be in good order long after the furniture around it has been replaced.
