9'8" x 12'8" Persian Tabriz Rug | Navy Blue All-Over Floral Field | Excellent Condition

Laid out flat, this 9'8" x 12'8" Persian Tabriz reads as one continuous garden rather than a rug with a centerpiece: a deep navy field carrying staggered rows of rosettes and palmettes, framed by a wide terracotta red border of the same flowering vine. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, the pile still standing a full 3/8" across the whole surface with no thin spots or repairs, and the condition is excellent. In the rounded 10x13 Persian rug class it is a true room-size piece, wide enough to hold a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table with the chairs pulled back. It ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The weaver used an all-over floral design, a lattice of thin ivory vines that links large 8 and 10 petal rosettes, smaller star blossoms, curled saz leaves and tiny budding sprays, repeating in offset rows from one end to the other. Look closely at the field detail and you can see how carefully the drawing is balanced: no two neighboring rosettes carry the same color, and every blossom is outlined so the motif lifts cleanly off the ground. The main border repeats broad palmettes and serrated leaves on red, and it is fenced on both sides by narrow ivory guard stripes filled with a running meander, plus a fine reciprocal stripe that keeps the whole frame crisp at the 4 corners. The turn of the corners is properly resolved, the mark of a drawn cartoon rather than an improvised village copy.

A Navy Field Against Terracotta Red

The ground is a saturated indigo navy that goes almost inky under low light and opens up to a clear royal blue in the close-up photographs, which is exactly what you want from a wool that was dyed deep and knotted tight. Against it the weaver worked an unusually cheerful palette: olive and pistachio green rosettes as the dominant accent, then terracotta and brick red, soft coral, pale sky blue, cream and small notes of chocolate brown and burgundy. The border reverses the scheme, putting those same greens and creams on a warm tomato red so the field is held rather than crowded. Among navy blue Persian rugs this one is on the lively side, and it does its best work in a room with cream walls or warm wood, where the green and coral read as color rather than as pattern.

Tabriz Weaving and Quality

Tabriz sits in the northwest corner of Persia and has been the country's workshop city for centuries, the place where cartoon drawing, dyeing and knotting were organized as a trade rather than a household craft. Weavers there work on the Raj system, counting knots per gereh across the width, and the discipline shows in a rug like this one: straight sides, an even beat, and a field that keeps its row spacing over almost 13 feet of length. The back photograph shows a tight, regular knot with no slack rows, and the wool is the tough, slightly lustrous fleece of the region that takes dye deeply and wears for generations under a cotton warp and weft. This is workshop weaving in a classic Tabriz idiom, made to be walked on hard and still look like this in 40 years.
