7' x 9' Persian Tabriz Rug | Navy Blue All Over Floral Field | Ivory Border | Excellent Condition
A 7' x 9' room-size Tabriz in the classic blue and ivory formula, hand-knotted in Persia with a 3/8" wool pile on a cotton foundation. The field is a deep navy blue worked edge to edge with palmettes and scrolling vines, framed by a broad ivory main border and a run of light blue guard stripes that keep the whole thing calm rather than busy. The pile still stands full and even, the ends and sides are sound, and the ivory fringe is clean, which is why it grades out in excellent condition. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted Persian piece, and this one is held in our own Freeport, NY warehouse rather than drop-shipped.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver chose a mirrored all over floral design, a lattice of thin vines that repeats up the length of the rug and carries large rounded palmettes, 8 and 10 petal rosettes, small tulip and carnation heads, and the curled serrated leaf that Tabriz drawing is known for. Look at the close-up photo and you can see how each palmette is outlined twice, once in dark navy and again in a lighter tone, so the flower lifts off the ground instead of flattening into it. The main ivory border runs a continuous meander of leaves and blossoms with 4 corners resolved cleanly, and it is flanked by narrow reciprocal stripes and a light blue vine border on both sides. All over fields like this one are the practical choice for a 7 by 9 space, because furniture can sit anywhere on the rug without cutting a medallion in half.
Color Palette: Deep Navy, Ivory and Salmon
The ground is a true dark navy blue, closer to ink than to royal blue, and it reads slightly lighter where the pile lies with the nap and deeper against it. Against that ground the flowers are drawn in soft ivory and cream, salmon pink, a dusty rose red, pale sky blue, olive green and a muted camel gold, with very small touches of deep brown and black in the outlines. The main border shifts to a warm ivory that is nearly butter cream under the light, and the guard borders bring in a clear light blue that connects the border back to the field. Blues and creams in this balance are the easiest Persian palette to live with, which is exactly why navy blue Persian rugs keep their following decade after decade. On warm oak or walnut floors the ivory border does the work of a frame, and on cool grey floors the salmon and camel accents are what keep the rug from going cold.
Tabriz Weaving in Northwest Persia
Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the commercial and technical center of Persian weaving for centuries, the city that trained most of the master designers working elsewhere in the country. Tabriz weavers count fineness in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of about 2.75 inches, where 40 Raj is good commercial work, 50 Raj is fine and 60 Raj and up is collector territory. What marks the Tabriz hand on this piece is the drawing discipline: the vines curve without wobbling, the palmettes repeat at exactly the same scale from one end to the other, and the borders turn the corner without the pattern being chopped to fit. The wool is a firm, slightly lustrous highland fleece cut to a 3/8" pile, knotted on a cotton foundation that gives the rug a flat, stable lie, so it takes traffic in a living room or a dining room without the field distorting.
