This is a hand-knotted Persian Tabriz rug woven in wool on a cotton foundation, measuring 7'5" x 9'9" and finished in a warm terracotta red with a wide ivory border. The drawing is city work rather than village work: every vine turns cleanly, the two halves of the field mirror each other along both axes, and the outlines are held in fine dark wool so the flowers keep their shape from across a room. The pile is even end to end with no repairs, no low spots and no reweaves, and the sides and fringes are original and intact. Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral composition rather than a single dominant medallion, though a small lobed rosette anchors the exact center and radiating arabesque bands ring it like faint petals. Around that center the weaver worked large open palmettes, sunburst rosettes with dark eyes, split curled leaves and long serrated saz leaves, all linked by thin scrolling vines that carry tiny buds and 5 petal blossoms into the corners. Paired curling cloudband forms sit above and below the middle, and the 4 corners repeat the same cluster of leaves and flower heads so the layout resolves symmetrically on all sides. The main ivory border runs a rhythm of framed palmettes and rosettes separated by curled leaf brackets, and it is fenced on both edges by narrow sage green guard stripes filled with a small linked flowerhead and cartouche motif. It is a busy design read up close and a calm, glowing one read from standing height.

A Terracotta Red Field Framed in Ivory

The ground is a soft brick or terracotta red, warmer and dustier than a hot scarlet, with the gentle tonal variation good hand-dyed wool always shows. Against it the flower heads carry cream, tan, camel gold and a pale rose, several of them shaded from light to dark within a single blossom so the petals look rounded. Leaves and vines are drawn in sage green, soft teal and a muted olive, with strong points of navy and near-black in the cloudbands and the centers of the larger rosettes to give the field depth. The wide border reverses the scheme entirely: an ivory ground lit with the same rose, gold, green and deep red, which stops the red at the edge and makes the rug read larger on the floor. The overall palette is warm and traditional, and it works particularly well with wood floors, leather, brass and cream upholstery.
