7'3" x 11' Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory All-Over Vase & Floral Design | Excellent Condition

This is a room size Persian Tabriz measuring 7'3" x 11', hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile that still stands full and even across the whole field. Instead of the usual central medallion, the weaver committed to an all-over design, an ivory ground carrying a mirrored lattice of flowering vases, palmettes, split leaves, birds and small four-footed animals that runs from end to end without a break. It is the kind of drawing that rewards standing over it: no two quadrants read the same at close range even though the layout is perfectly balanced. Condition is excellent, with clean selvedges, original ends and no repairs visible in the photographs. Design and Motifs

The field is organized on a vertical axis: a column of stylized flower vases, the goldani motif, marches up the center, each one flanked by curling acanthus leaves and dark plum palmettes that anchor the composition. Around them the weaver filled every open space with serrated leaves, rosettes, buds on thin stems, and a scatter of small figures, birds with spread wings, leaping animals and long-tailed creatures in blue, brown and gold. The main border is a broad burnt sienna band carrying paired blue and ivory palmettes with winged crest motifs at the corners, framed on both sides by narrow dark navy guard stripes of running vine, then a fine ivory stripe with 4 petal rosettes at the very edge. The corner resolutions are properly drawn rather than cut off, which is one of the clearest signs of a cartoon-woven city piece rather than a village copy.

Ivory Ground and Burnt Sienna Borders

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than white, and it does the important work here by letting a very busy drawing breathe. Against it the palette runs through burnt sienna and copper in the main border, deep aubergine and navy in the guard stripes and the largest palmettes, and then an unusually wide range of accent tones inside the field: sky blue, teal, sage and olive green, dusty rose, brick red, soft gold and touches of pale peach. Because each motif is outlined in a darker shade, the colors stay crisp instead of blurring into one another. The overall effect is warm and light rather than dark and formal, so the rug sits easily with oak and walnut floors, cream plaster walls and both antique and transitional furniture. Tabriz Weaving and Quality

Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has been the country's most commercially important weaving city for centuries, the place where the workshop system, the paper cartoon and the hook-knife hook were refined into a repeatable standard. Fineness there is measured in Raj, the count of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches, and even at the middle of that scale a Tabriz workshop can hold a curved line and render a bird's wing or a vase handle cleanly, which is exactly what you see in the close-up photographs of this piece.
