9'9" x 13'2" Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory All Over Floral Field | Excellent Condition
This is a classic ivory ground Tabriz in a true room size, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a tight 3/8" pile that still stands up evenly across the whole field. There is no central medallion here, which is deliberate: the drawing runs edge to edge so the rug reads as one continuous garden rather than a single focal point, and that makes it far easier to live with under a sofa group or a long dining table. The condition is excellent, the ends and sides are sound, the fringe is clean and the colors are still fresh in the pile. It sits squarely in the 10x13 Persian rugs range, and like every rug we import directly, it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all over Persian rug design built from thin scrolling vines that loop and cross in mirrored pairs, carrying large serrated palmettes, curled saz leaves, elongated boteh forms and small 8 petal rosettes. Look closely at the close-up photos and you can see how the weaver shaded each palmette in three or four tones so the flower turns from red to gold to a pale outline at the tip, and how tiny leaf sprays and single blossoms fill every gap between the vines. Vase-like flowering forms anchor the center line at both ends, which gives the pattern a top and bottom without resorting to a medallion. The wide main border carries a repeating ivory ground procession of tulip and palmette clusters tied together by a continuous vine, framed by a narrow red and navy guard stripe on each side and a fine barber pole outer stripe. The corners resolve cleanly, with the border pattern turning the angle without being cut off, which is a drawing detail you only get from a proper workshop cartoon.
A Warm Ivory Ground With Brown and Jewel Tone Accents
The ground is a warm, slightly creamy ivory rather than a cold white, so it holds its own against oak floors and reads soft under both daylight and lamplight. Over that ivory the palette runs brown and walnut in the vine work, brick red and soft rose in the palmettes and rosettes, deep navy and a distinctive peacock teal in the boteh forms and leaf hoods, with sage green, soft gold and pale sky blue doing the shading work. The border repeats the same ivory ground, which is what keeps a rug this large from feeling heavy, and the thin navy guard stripes draw a crisp dark line around the whole design. Buyers shopping ivory and beige Persian rugs for a light room will find this one unusually versatile, since the accent colors are varied enough to pick up almost any upholstery without dictating the scheme. Photographs of ivory fields always shift slightly with lighting, so expect the cream to look a shade warmer in person than on a bright screen.
Tabriz Weaving and the Quality of This Weave
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia, in Azerbaijan province, and has been the commercial and technical center of Persian weaving for centuries. Its workshops measure fineness in Raj, the number of knots per gereh of about 2.75 in across the width, and they work from paper cartoons drawn by professional designers, which is exactly why a curvilinear all over pattern like this one stays symmetrical over more than 13 feet of length. Tabriz weavers also use a hook-ended knife and weave on sturdy vertical looms with a cotton warp and weft, producing a flat, dense, dimensionally stable rug that lies properly without buckling. The back photograph shows straight, even rows and small, regular knots with no hurried areas or color blocks, and the 3/8" wool pile has the firm spring that good Azerbaijani highland wool gives. That combination, disciplined drawing plus tough wool on a strong cotton foundation, is why a Tabriz of this grade stays in a family for decades of daily use.
