6' x 9' Chinese Aubusson Silk Rug | Honey Field, Ivory Floral Border | Bamboo Silk Pile, Mint Condition
This 6' x 9' rug is a hand-knotted Chinese reading of the French Aubusson tradition, worked in bamboo silk on a cotton foundation so the honey field throws light back like polished brass as you walk around it. The drawing is restrained rather than crowded: an open center, a single round floral wreath, four corner bouquets and a wide ivory border, which is exactly how the best Aubusson-inspired pieces are laid out. The pile has been lightly carved along the outlines of every flower and scroll, giving the surface a shallow relief you can feel with your hand. It has never been used, the ends and sides are original and tight, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted piece. As an Oriental rug in the most useful of all room formats, it sits comfortably with other 6x9 area rugs under a seating group or a small dining table.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft vertical lines visible down the honey field in several photos are fold shadows from rolled storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. High-sheen bamboo silk reflects light differently along a fold, so the mark photographs more strongly than it looks in person. The lines relax once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a round wreath medallion built from 4 large lotus rosettes set at the compass points, linked by curling cloud scrolls and small pink buds, with the middle deliberately left empty so the field can breathe. Around it sit 4 generous corner bouquets of roses, peonies and camellias with fruit and berry accents, drawn in the naturalistic European manner that gives the Aubusson family its name rather than in a stylized geometric idiom. Each corner of the inner field is anchored by an urn framed in a Greek key fret, a distinctly Chinese touch inside a French composition. The inner guard runs a fine sawtooth leaf band; the wide ivory main border alternates large brown and taupe lotus rosettes with paired winged cartouches and long sage arabesques. Carving along the outlines throws a shadow line around every petal, so the pattern stays legible from standing height as well as up close.
A Honey Gold Field With Ivory and Garden Pastels
Color is the reason to buy this one. The field is a deep honey gold that shifts between amber, caramel and near bronze depending on where you stand, a movement you only get from a high-sheen silk pile laid in one direction. Against that warmth the main border reads as a clean ivory cream, cooled by sage and seafoam green scrollwork and outlined in a soft walnut brown. The flowers carry the rest of the palette: rose pink and dusty raspberry peonies, buttery yellow roses with white edges, pale jade and mint green blossoms, blush and taupe petals, with small orange fruit and ivory berries scattered through the foliage. Nothing is loud. The whole scheme sits in the warm neutral range, which is why it works against dark hardwood, walnut furniture and teal or olive upholstery just as easily as it does in a pale room.
Chinese Weaving of a French Aubusson Design
Chinese workshops have interpreted French Aubusson and Savonnerie cartoons for well over a century, and this piece belongs squarely to that line: a European floral layout translated into a knotted pile rug with local motifs such as the fret band, the lotus and the cloud scroll worked quietly into the scheme. The back, visible in the photographs, shows a tidy even weave on a cotton foundation with straight rows and no pulled selvedges, and the fringe is an original extension of the warps rather than a sewn-on addition. Bamboo silk takes dye brilliantly and holds a mirror-like luster, which is what gives the honey ground its depth; the light carving is a hand finishing step done after weaving and is a reliable sign of a workshop that took its time.
