6' x 9' French Aubusson Bamboo Silk Rug | Black Field with Ivory Rose Medallion | Brand New
At 6' x 9', this hand-knotted rug carries a complete French Aubusson composition: a shaped ivory cartouche holding a bouquet of roses at the center, an ivory strapwork frame drawn around the inner field, and 4 corner cartouches that repeat the same floral spray in miniature. The pile is bamboo silk, clipped low so the drawing stays crisp and the light travels across the surface the way it does on needlepoint, and it sits on a cotton foundation. The rug is new and has never been walked on, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity. If you are shopping 6 x 9 Oriental rugs for a formal room, this is the version of that footprint that gives you court-style European drawing with a luminous, low-profile surface rather than a heavy wool nap.
Please Note About the Photographs:
Two of the angled photographs show soft fold lines and shadows left by rolled and stacked storage. Those are not wear, not fading and not damage. The pile relaxes once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is pure 18th century French salon carpet vocabulary, the Aubusson and Savonnerie idiom of shaped panels, ribbon banding and curling acanthus. A scalloped ivory cartouche sits dead center, outlined in bands of taupe and mauve, with a tied bouquet of full-blown roses, carnations and small blossoms at its heart. Around it the black field opens into large caramel acanthus scrolls, trailing rose garlands and sprigs of small buds, all drawn with the curved line and shading that this style depends on. An ivory frame with a fine scrolling vine runs around the inner field and breaks at the middle of each side with a crested cresting motif, while the 4 corners are filled by cartouches of their own, each one a rose spray on a blush ground wrapped in ivory and gold volutes. A burgundy panel carries the next register with garlands and a shell palmette at the center of each side, and the wide black outer border closes the rug with a continuous meandering vine of leaves and pale blossoms above hand-tied ivory fringe.
A Black Field with Ivory, Rose and Burgundy
The field is a deep ink black with a navy cast that shifts toward midnight blue where the light strikes the pile, and that darkness is what makes everything on top of it glow. The central cartouche is champagne ivory warming to a soft blush, shaded with mocha and a grayed lilac in its outlines. The roses run through a full range of pinks, from pale shell and dusty rose to a saturated wine red, with small accents of clean white at the petal edges. Leaves and stems are sage, olive and a muted bottle green, and the scrollwork is worked in caramel, honey gold and antique brown that reads as old gilding. A wine burgundy panel frames the field and provides the only large block of warm color, edged with a slate blue sawtooth guard. Muted teal and gray-blue rosette centers appear here and there as cool punctuation. Buyers who search for black and ivory area rugs rarely find this much floral warmth held inside a dark ground.
Woven in China in the French Aubusson Tradition
This is an honest Made in China piece, hand-knotted knot by knot on a cotton warp in a workshop that specializes in European court designs rather than tribal or village patterns. Chinese ateliers took up the Aubusson and Savonnerie repertoire because those compositions reward exactly what a disciplined workshop can deliver: a fine, even knot count, controlled color shading across dozens of tones, and curved lines that never wobble. The reverse, visible in the tape-measure photograph, shows a tight, regular grid with the design legible from the back, which is the reliable test of a well-drawn workshop weave. The pile is bamboo silk, a plant-based fiber spun from bamboo pulp that takes dye brilliantly and carries a silk-like sheen; it is not natural silk, and we say so plainly. As an Oriental rug in perfect, never used condition, it arrives with full loft and every knot intact.
