7'1" x 7'2" Square Chinese Oriental Rug | Black Minnici Art Deco Ribbon & Rosette Design | New

A true square at 7'1" x 7'2", this hand-knotted wool piece is one of the more theatrical things we stock. The Minnici drawing throws oversized ribbon bows and pinwheel rosettes across a deep black ground, with no repeating floral border to calm it down, which makes it behave less like a traditional Oriental rug and more like a framed graphic laid on the floor. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand and finished with hand-braided cotton fringe at both ends, and the square footprint suits a seating group, a games table or a square entry landing where a rectangle always fights the walls. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted rug.

Please Note About the Photographs:

In the full overhead photograph the black field reads lighter and slightly streaked in places. That is the nap of the wool catching the studio light from different directions, not fade, not wear and not damage. Viewed in the room, as in the angled floor photograph, the ground is a solid deep black. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The composition is built in 3 clear rings. At the center sits a single large rosette medallion, a tight concentric disc of blue and tan beading from which looped ribbons of coral, teal and sky blue spin outward like a pinwheel, the whole thing caught inside a square cage of pale tan batons that cross and overlap like bamboo scaffolding. Around that, 4 flat panel bars filled with small cream and brick cartouches sit at the cardinal points, each one anchored by its own smaller bow and rosette so the eye keeps circling. The outer frame drops the usual guard stripes entirely: long cream panels studded with tiny tile-like blocks run along the 4 sides, interrupted at the corners and midpoints by big draped bows, some with harlequin diamond streamers, some with rose and gold bouquet centers of the kind shown in the border close-up. It is Art Deco thinking applied to a knotted pile rug, which is why it sits comfortably with modern and contemporary rugs rather than with classical medallion work.

Color: A Black Field Carrying Coral, Teal and Cream

The ground is a saturated near-ink black, dense enough that it reads as negative space and pushes every motif forward. Against it the ribbons run through a narrow but confident palette: a soft coral red that deepens to burgundy where the folds turn, a cool mid blue that shades into teal green on the longer streamers, pale tan and camel on the lattice bars and the panel frames, and a clean cream that does the drawing and keeps the outlines crisp. The central rosette adds a copper-tan button at its core, and the border bouquets bring a dustier rose with gold and ivory petals. Because the accents are few and repeated, the rug stays graphic rather than busy, and it pairs easily with other black and white rugs, warm wood floors and brass or dark metal furniture.

Made in China: Workshop Weaving and Quality

This is Chinese workshop weaving, hand-knotted on a cotton warp and weft with a wool pile, and the quality shows in exactly the places that matter on a design like this. Long sweeping curves, the looped ribbon edges and the harlequin diamonds all hold their line without stepping or wobble, which takes an even knot count and a weaver following a careful cartoon. The pile is clipped to a medium height with a visible luster, and the outlines of the motifs are defined cleanly enough that each ribbon separates from the black ground at a glance. The ruler photograph shows the finishing: a tight black kilim end, a woven cotton selvage band and hand-knotted fringe, all consistent with a genuine hand-knotted square rug rather than a tufted or machine-made copy. Unused and in excellent condition, it is ready to go straight down on the floor.
