A true square is unusual in hand-knotted work, and this one measures 10'1" x 10'1", which makes it a rare fit for the rooms that actually are square: a centered seating group, a square dining table, a landing, a garden room. It is hand-knotted in wool at a 3/8" pile on a cotton foundation, and the pile is dense enough that the black ground reads like velvet and the raised ribbon work catches light from across the room. The condition is perfect, with full pile, straight sides and clean ivory fringe, as shown in the last photo alongside a ruler on the reverse. Design and Motifs

The drawing is recorded as the Minnici design, and it is pure deco theater rather than a traditional repeating field. At the center sits a single large rosette built from looping ribbons, each ribbon shaded and banded with small diamond checkers, wound around a concentric disc with a domed button at the core. That medallion rests inside a squared cage of pale gold bars and mosaic-filled panels, an architectural frame that reads almost like joinery. Four smaller ribbon fans break out from the corners and sides of that cage, and the outer border repeats the theme in a different register: eight petal ribbon rosettes and draped floral swags at the 4 corners and midpoints, joined by slim gold bars set with tiny tile-like blocks. The field between all of these elements is left deliberately open, which is what gives the piece its graphic punch. Close up, the pile is carved just enough at the outlines that each ribbon lifts away from the black ground, so the pattern has real dimension when you walk past it.

A Black Field with Blue, Coral and Gold

The ground is a deep saturated black, close to ink, with no busy secondary pattern to compete for attention. Against it, the palette runs in two families. The cool side is a bright mid blue that shades down into teal green and up into a soft powder blue on the diamond bands, seen most clearly in the angled floor photograph where the long ribbon tails fan across the field. The warm side runs from coral to rose to a deeper brick red, with the border swags leaning pink and the central rosette loops leaning coral. Holding the two together is a run of pale gold and tan on the bars and cage panels, edged with ivory and a warm apricot that reappears in the small diamond checkers. Touches of cream and sand appear in the floral clusters on the border swags. The overall effect is high contrast and jewel-like, a rug that will read as black and multi-colored from a distance and reveal its shading only when you are standing on it.

Made in China: Weaving and Quality

China's workshops built their reputation in the early 20th century on exactly this kind of piece: an open ground, a bold studio drawing, a thick clipped wool pile and a palette aimed at Western interiors, and that tradition is what an Oriental rug from China still means today. This one is hand-knotted throughout, knot by knot on a cotton warp and weft, with the back showing even rows and a firm handle, and the ends finished with a woven kilim band and hand-twisted ivory fringe. The wool is chosen for luster rather than hardness, which is why the black holds depth instead of going flat and why the carved outlines stay crisp. Achieving a true 121" by 121" square on the loom takes constant tension control, since any drift shows immediately in a design this symmetrical, and here the cage, the medallion and the 4 corner swags all line up.
