7'11" x 10'1" Chobi Oriental Rug | Vegetable Dyed All Over Floral | Charcoal & Ivory | Made in India
This 7'11" x 10'1" Chobi is a hand-knotted wool rug from India, built on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile that still stands full and even across the whole field. It is a classic Chobi reading: a deep charcoal, almost black ground carrying a continuous all over floral design, framed by a wide ivory main border and two narrow guard stripes. The wool is soft to the hand but tightly packed, and the back photograph shows clean, regular knotting with no slack rows. Condition is excellent, the ends and sides are original and intact, and every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. The field is drawn as one uninterrupted vine system: slender rust-brown stems that curve, split and rejoin, hanging large lotus palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, cupped half palmettes and long serrated leaves at regular intervals, with small paisley-like buds filling the spaces between. The repeat is mirrored down the center line, so the pattern reads as orderly rather than busy, and because it has no medallion the rug tolerates furniture over it without losing its design. The ivory border is the quieter counterpart, a procession of upright palmette fans and leafy rosettes alternating along the full length, locked in by two thin floral guard stripes. Drawing of this kind, curved line and continuous vine rather than village angles, is what separates a well made contemporary Oriental rug from a simplified copy.
A Charcoal Field Under Ivory, Olive and Rust
The field is a very dark charcoal black with a faint aubergine cast where the light catches the pile, and that darkness is what makes the rest of the palette work. The flowerheads come up in soft olive and sage green, antique gold, cream and bone ivory, with rust and salmon in the larger palmettes and small points of burgundy at their centers. Nothing is harsh: the tones are muted, slightly dusty, exactly the low-saturation look buyers want from a vegetable dyed Chobi, and the close-up photograph shows gentle variation within single colors where the hand-spun yarn takes the dye unevenly. The border shifts from pale ivory to a warmer straw gold, so there is a clear change in value between field and frame rather than a hard outline. As one of our multi-colored Oriental rugs, it sits easily with both warm and cool rooms.
Chobi Weaving in India
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and the Chobi group is the clearest example of why. Chobi means wood colored, a reference to the muted natural dye palette these workshops built their name on, and the style grew out of the old large-scale all over floral designs that Western buyers have wanted on their floors for more than a century. The weavers use hand-spun wool rather than machine-spun yarn, which is why the pile has that slight irregularity and the dyes settle with depth instead of flatness, and the rug is knotted row by row on a cotton warp exactly as it has been for generations. Judged honestly on its own terms, this is a well executed workshop piece: consistent knot density across 7'11" x 10'1", straight selvages, square corners, and a wool quality that will take decades of traffic.
