9'1" x 12' Chobi Oriental Rug | Green All-Over Floral Field | Vegetable Dyed Wool, Made in India

This is a room size Chobi, hand-knotted in India in 100% wool on a cotton foundation, and it belongs to the family of vegetable dyed weaves that collectors and decorators have been chasing for the last two decades. The field is a soft, slightly variegated green, drawn edge to edge with curling leaves, palmettes and rosettes, and it is framed by a wide dark brown border that gives the whole piece its weight. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The weavers used a classical all-over floral layout, a repeating lattice of thin vines that links shield shaped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, tulip heads and long serrated acanthus leaves, mirrored along both axes so the drawing reads the same from either end of the room. The close-up photo shows how much detail sits inside each element: a palmette outlined in indigo, filled with coral and cream, with a pair of small red tulips at its heart. The wide main border carries 4 corner palmettes and a procession of large rosettes and cream cartouche flowers separated by scrolling leaves, and it is held in place by 2 narrow guard stripes of small buds and hooked vine on an ivory ground. The corner resolutions are clean, the border turns the corner properly rather than being cut off, and that is the first thing to check on any large piece of this style.

Color: Sage Green Field Against a Dark Brown Border

The field is a muted sage to olive green with visible abrash, the gentle horizontal striation you get when hand-spun wool takes natural dye in separate batches. It is a quiet, dusty green, not a bright one, and it behaves like a neutral next to oak floors, walnut furniture and cream walls. The main border is a very dark espresso brown that reads almost black at a distance and is what gives the rug its graphic frame, while the guard borders and outer selvage step down through camel, gold and pale ivory. Inside both field and border the accent palette is wide but restrained: rust and coral in the flower heads, soft periwinkle and slate blue in the outlines, antique gold in the vines, cream and bone in the leaf tips, and small notes of near black that pick up the border. The vegetable dyes have a softness under showroom light that synthetic colors never achieve, and they will mellow further rather than fade harshly.

Chobi takes its name from the word for wood, a reference to the plant and wood based dyes that define the style: madder root, indigo, walnut husk, pomegranate rind and weld. India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that without hedging. The workshops there combine good hand-spun wool, disciplined drawing and knot counts that hold fine detail, which is exactly what this piece shows on the back: an even, tightly packed weave with the pattern legible knot for knot, straight sides and a flat, true lie on the floor. The pile has been clipped low so the outlines stay crisp, and the wool has a natural sheen that comes from lanolin rather than from chemical washing.
