This is a brand new, never used Jaipur rug, hand-knotted in India in dense wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the classic Mughal court manner: an ivory field covered edge to edge in flowering vine, contained by a deep black border. At 9'1" x 12' it is a true room size piece, sitting right in the most requested bracket of 9x12 area rugs, with enough length to carry a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design built from large curled palmettes, open lotus blossoms, split leaf arabesques and small 8 petal rosettes, all linked by a brown vine that loops and doubles back on itself without ever breaking. The drawing repeats in mirrored pairs down the length of the rug, so the pattern reads as ordered rather than busy, and the spacing leaves enough ivory ground visible to keep the field bright. The black main border runs a procession of large fan shaped palmettes and cusped cartouches separated by curling leaf work, and a narrow camel toned guard band on each side, patterned with small rosettes and paired leaves, holds the border away from the field. The 4 corners resolve cleanly, which is a mark of a well drawn cartoon and careful weaving.

Ivory Ground With Black, Green and Rust Accents

The field is a warm ivory that leans toward soft golden cream in raking light, visible in the close pile photographs where the wool shows its natural sheen. Against it the palette is autumnal: sage and olive green in the leaves, rust and terracotta in the petal edges, burnt orange and gold in the smaller blossoms, and deep brown in the vine work, with tiny points of dark red and a rare touch of pale blue used as highlights inside the larger palmettes. The border is a true black, dense and even, which throws the ivory field forward and gives the rug a crisp outline on light stone, grey tile or dark hardwood. Between the two sits the camel guard stripe, a mid tone that softens what would otherwise be a hard ivory to black transition. The overall effect is warm and traditional rather than stark, and the earth tones make it forgiving in rooms with brown leather, walnut or brass.

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great hand-knotting centers of India, and India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. The weavers there work from detailed cartoons in the classical floral tradition, and this piece shows it: fine outlining, curved stems that hold their line through a full loop, and shading within a single palmette across 3 or 4 tones. The pile is dense and firmly packed, with a good handle and real weight, so the rug lies flat and will take traffic in a main room for decades.
