9'1" x 11'9" Serapi Rug | Ivory Field, Red Floral Border | Made in India

This is a hand-knotted Serapi in the useful room size, 9'1" x 11'9", which drops neatly into the footprint most buyers shopping 9x12 area rugs are working with. The field is a warm ivory, the wide main border is a clear tomato red, and the whole surface is drawn in the squared, slightly angular Serapi manner rather than the tight curvilinear style of a city workshop. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, short enough that the drawing stays crisp and heavy enough to take traffic under a dining table or a long sofa. Condition is excellent, with even pile from end to end and straight, tidy selvedges. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the ivory ground carries an all-over lattice that repeats up the length of the rug in two alternating columns. The first column is built from rust red diamond cartouches with stepped outlines, each one filled with a gold and green interior rosette and outlined in slate blue and ivory. The second column sets paired angular frames, drawn like open brackets in deep red, that enclose small leaf sprays and face each other across a cream shield motif. Between them run long serrated leaves in camel and olive, curling vine tendrils in coral, 8 petal rosettes, tiny star flowers and scattered comma shaped buds in navy and violet. The main border repeats a large palmette and rosette on a scrolling vine over the red ground, and is fenced on both sides by camel gold guard borders carrying a smaller blossom and leaf chain. Corners resolve cleanly, which is the mark of a weaver following a properly drafted design rather than improvising at the ends.

Ivory and Red: Reading the Palette

The two colors that carry the rug are the ivory field and the red border, but neither is flat. The ground reads as a soft, slightly warm cream that shifts toward pale wheat where the light catches the pile, so it never looks bleached or stark. The border red is a bright tomato with a brick undertone, a shade cooler than orange and clearly separated from the deeper wine red used for the lattice frames and the diamond cartouches inside the field. Around that sit camel and honey gold in the guard borders and the serrated leaves, sage and olive green in the rosette centers and the border palmettes, a muted denim blue in the medallion outlines and the small buds, saffron yellow in the flower hearts, and touches of soft pink and pure ivory in the blossom chains. Close up, as in the detail photo, the effect is genuinely multi-colored; from standing height it settles down into the ivory and red reading and works against oak floors, painted white trim and warm neutral walls.

Made in India: Weaving and Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in India, and that is a recommendation rather than a caveat. India's weaving belt is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, on upright looms, with hand-spun wool, natural dye recipes and the same knot-by-knot method used for a century. The back photograph tells the story: even rows, a regular knot count across the width, no gaps or bunching, and a firm handle that comes from a well-tensioned cotton warp. The wool has a dry, slightly glossy finish that takes the red and gold particularly well and will polish rather than dull with use.
