9'1" x 11'8" Oushak Design Rug | Soft Gray Field with Ivory Floral Border | Made in India
This is a hand-knotted Oushak design rug measuring 9'1" x 11'8", woven in India in hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation with a 3/8" pile. The whole piece is built around restraint: a quiet slate gray field, ivory drawing that sits just a shade or two lighter than the ground, and a wide cream border that frames the field without shouting. It is in excellent condition, with the even, clean pile and crisp selvedges you can see in the corner photograph, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted rug. At just over 9 by nearly 12 feet it is sized for a full seating group or a 10 seat table, and it belongs with the other large hand-knotted rugs we keep in stock in Freeport.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic Oushak all-over design with no central medallion, so the pattern reads evenly from every side of the room. Columns of angular diamond rosettes alternate with broad serrated palmettes and feathered leaf forms, linked by thin stems that branch into small cruciform flowers, 4 petal blossoms and tiny stray buds scattered through the open ground. The drawing is deliberately loose rather than mechanical: individual motifs vary slightly in width and outline, which is the signature of a design carried in the weaver's hand rather than copied knot for knot. The main border holds a repeating 8 petal rosette set inside a hexagonal cartouche, separated by leafy sprays, and is flanked on both sides by narrow checkerboard guard stripes that pull the composition tight at all 4 corners.
A Study in Soft Gray and Ivory
Color is the real argument for this rug. The ground is a mid gray with a cool blue cast, closer to slate in the shade and dove gray in direct light, and it shifts gently across the width in soft horizontal bands where the wool lots change. Over that, the motifs are drawn in cream and chalk ivory, with secondary outlines in a paler powder blue and a few leaves in a faintly greenish gray that keeps the palette from going flat. The border reverses the scheme, putting gray and blue gray drawing on an undyed ivory ground, so the frame glows against the darker field. There is no black, no red and no high contrast anywhere, which makes it one of the easiest pieces in our grey and charcoal rugs group to live with alongside white walls, oak floors, linen upholstery or brushed nickel and chrome.
Woven in India in the Oushak Tradition
The Oushak drawing comes out of western Anatolia, but this rug was made in India, and that is worth saying plainly: India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, with experienced workshops, well sorted hand-spun wool and weavers who can hold a large all-over design square across nearly 12 feet of length. The back photograph shows the proof, a clean cotton warp and weft with tidy, regular knot rows and no packing or distortion, which is what keeps a rug this size lying flat. The 3/8" clipped pile suits the fine, slightly spidery drawing and gives the surface a dry, matte handle rather than a glossy one. For buyers weighing up terminology, this piece is exactly what the trade means by a modern Oriental rug: traditional design and genuine hand knotting, in a color story made for how rooms are decorated today.
