8' x 9'8" Oushak Design Rug | Ivory Trellis on Olive Brown Field | New, Made in India
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted wool rug woven in India in the Oushak idiom, and it is the kind of quiet piece that does a great deal of work in a room without shouting for attention. The field is a warm olive brown that shifts toward gold under light, crossed by a slender ivory lattice, and the wide cream border carries long serrated leaves and palmettes in soft sage and chocolate. It is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not machine made and not tufted, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool pile and the origin.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver laid a diamond trellis of thin ivory vines across the whole field, pinning each intersection with a small 8 petal rosette and filling alternate compartments with larger blossoms and little cruciform sprigs. That is classic Oushak logic: a repeating structure that reads as pattern from a distance and resolves into individual flowers when you stand over it. The main border runs a procession of curling serrated leaves flanking upright palmettes, framed top and bottom by narrow guard stripes of running vine, and the 4 corners are drawn cleanly so the leaves turn without breaking rhythm. Because the drawing is an all-over pattern, furniture can sit anywhere on it without cutting off a focal point, which is one reason this layout is so forgiving in the 8x10 rug size.
A Field of Olive Brown Under Ivory Lattice
The palette is entirely warm and entirely neutral. The ground is a golden olive brown, closer to caramel where the pile catches the light and closer to bronze where it lies away from it, and the close-up photograph shows the gentle vertical banding known as abrash, the natural tonal drift that comes from hand-spun, small-batch dyed wool rather than from any flaw. Over that ground the lattice and the flowerheads are ivory and pale beige, soft enough that the contrast never turns graphic. The border is cream, several shades lighter than the field, with the leaves picked out in a muted sage green and outlined in a dusty chocolate brown that also appears in the tiny flower centers. The outer guard stripe carries a faint moss tone that ties the border back to the field. Against oak or walnut flooring it reads as honey and cream; against a pale rug pad or light stone it reads browner and deeper.
Woven in India in the Oushak Tradition
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and that is said with confidence rather than apology. The weaving workshops of northern India took the Oushak vocabulary, originally from western Anatolia, and have spent decades refining it for modern interiors: softer contrast, hand-spun wool, a slightly longer pile that gives the surface its sheen. This piece is knotted on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, and the reverse shown against the ruler is even and regular, with the knot nodes clearly defined and the design legible from the back, which is always the honest test of a hand-knotted rug. The selvedges are tight and the cotton fringe is the extension of the warp, not a sewn-on addition. New, unused and in perfect condition, it has its full pile height and decades of wear still ahead of it.
