Design and Motifs

This is a classic Oushak layout: no single dominant medallion, but a repeating lattice of large rounded cartouches and palmettes that carries across the whole field. Scrolling vines outline soft ogee compartments, and inside them sit fan-shaped palmettes, 8 petal rosettes and split leaves, with a small gold cartouche medallion anchoring the center of each repeat. Between the larger forms, the weaver has scattered curled serrated leaves and tiny buds so no part of the ground feels empty, which is exactly what an all-over floral design is supposed to do. The main border is wide and ivory, filled with alternating boteh-like blossoms and rosettes joined by a thin vine, and it is flanked by narrow guard stripes that pick up small rust flame heads at regular intervals. Because the field pattern repeats in all 4 directions, the rug can be turned without the design looking upside down, which matters a great deal in a room where furniture gets rearranged.

The Teal Blue, Ivory and Rust Palette

The field color is the reason to buy this rug. It is a teal blue with green in it, closer to sea glass or oxidized copper than to navy, and it is mottled very slightly from one row of knots to the next, the way naturally dyed wool behaves. Against that ground, the motifs run through a warm range: pale gold and honey in the cartouches, camel and light bronze in the palmettes, sage green and taupe in the leaves, ivory in the highlights. Rust appears in small, deliberate doses, as tiny flame heads in the guard stripes, as outlines inside the border blossoms, and as the occasional accent in the center of a rosette, so it reads as warmth rather than red. The wide ivory border is a soft cream rather than a bright white and carries a faint sandy undertone that keeps the whole piece from feeling cold. Woven in Pakistan in the Oushak Tradition

The Oushak name comes from western Anatolia, but the workshops of Pakistan have spent decades making this style their own, and today a great deal of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving comes out of Lahore and Peshawar.
