9'1" x 12'3" Jaipur Rug | Black All-Over Floral Vine Field | Deer and Tree Border | Made in India

This is a hand-knotted Jaipur rug in the full room size that most buyers are hunting for, a true 9'1" x 12'3" with a deep black ground carrying an all-over vine and palmette design from selvage to selvage. The wool pile is dense and evenly clipped, the drawing is unusually controlled for a piece this large, and the colour balance reads as formal without turning heavy. It is in excellent condition and has never been used, so the pile still stands full and the ivory outlines are crisp. Among 9x12 hand-knotted rugs, a black-ground example of this quality is far less common than the usual red or ivory field.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over lattice of slender ivory vines that arch, cross and repeat across the full length of the rug with no medallion to interrupt them. Inside each arch sit large 8 petal rosettes, lotus palmettes, split leaves and small boteh forms, each one finely outlined so the motif separates cleanly from the dark ground. The main border is the piece that gives this rug its personality: against a matching black band, stylised trees and flowering plants alternate with grazing deer and large ivory and gold palmettes, a hunting garden vocabulary treated calmly rather than dramatically. Camel guard bands carry a small repeating leaf and blossom vine on all 4 sides and frame the design with a lighter tone that lifts the whole composition. As an Oriental rug in the classical tradition, the drawing follows the curved line school rather than a village geometric style.

A Black Field Lit by Ivory, Sage and Rose

Black is the anchor here, a true dense charcoal black that photographs almost inky in the close-up shots and softens to a deep aubergine cast where the light strikes across the pile. Everything else is drawn on top of it. The vine work is ivory and pale cream, the largest rosettes come through in sage green, olive and soft gold, and scattered blossoms pick up dusty rose, old burgundy and a muted powder blue that appears only in the smallest leaf tips. The inner and outer guard bands shift to camel and warm tan, which keeps the border from reading as one solid dark mass and gives the rug an edge of light all the way around. Used in a room, the black ground grounds pale oak or walnut flooring and lets ivory, brass, olive and burgundy furnishings tie straight into the palette.

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great weaving centres of northern India, and India is where most of the world's finest contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. We say that with confidence: the best Indian workshops recruit skilled weavers, buy good highland wool, spin and dye to order, and hold a standard of drawing that commercial production elsewhere cannot match. This rug shows it. The back photograph reveals small, tightly packed knots on a cotton foundation, with the pattern reading almost as clearly from the reverse as from the face, which is the honest test of a well-woven piece. The selvages are tight, the ends are finished with an even fringe, and the pile has been clipped low enough to hold the fine outlines of the vine work without losing body underfoot.
