9' x 12'2" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Charcoal Black All-Over Floral Field | Ivory Border | Made in India
This is a new, never used hand-knotted Jaipur piece in the room size most American homes actually need, and it arrives with a certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted construction, the wool pile and the Indian origin. The pile is dense and evenly clipped, the selvedges are tight and dark, and the ivory cotton fringe is hand finished at both ends. What sells this rug in person is the contrast: a very dark, almost inky ground carrying an entire garden of gold, coral and olive drawing, framed by a broad beige border that lifts the whole thing off the floor. Anyone comparing it against machine-made lookalikes should read what separates a true Oriental rug from a printed imitation, because the difference shows up the moment you fold a corner back, as in the weave photo here.
Design and Motifs
The field is a continuous all-over floral lattice with no central medallion, built from thin scrolling vines that cross and recross to form soft diamond compartments. Inside each compartment sits a different flower head: large gold and coral palmettes, 8 petal rosettes with burgundy centers, cypress-shaped leaf sprays and small lotus buds. Serrated olive leaves curl back along the vines, and the drawing repeats on both axes so the pattern reads correctly from every side of the room, which is exactly what you want in a 9x12 layout where furniture covers part of the field. The beige main border carries a bolder version of the same vocabulary, big rosettes and leafy palmettes set nose to nose, and it is separated from the field by narrow pale green and rust guard stripes that give the composition its crisp edge. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning properly rather than being cut off.
The Charcoal Black Field and Its Beige, Rust, Green and Gold Palette
The ground reads as a deep charcoal black with a blue-black cast, and under raking light the wool takes on a faint graphite sheen rather than a flat dead black. Against it, the palette is warm and mellow: antique gold and honey in the palmettes, terracotta and coral in the smaller blossoms, olive and sage in the leafwork, with small hits of burgundy and a pale slate blue used sparingly for accent. The beige border is a soft sand tone, closer to buttery ivory in the outer field and warming toward wheat where the gold drawing sits. That border color is the reason this rug works with oak and walnut floors as easily as it does over light tile, and the dark field hides everyday traffic in a way ivory-ground rugs simply cannot. Nothing is neon, nothing is chalky; the dye lots are even from end to end.
Jaipur Weaving and the Quality of This Piece
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great contemporary weaving centers, and India is today where most of the world's best new hand-knotted work is produced. The workshops there weave on cotton warps with hand-spun wool, follow full cartoons for classical floral drawing, and finish with hand clipping and washing that gives the pile its soft luster. This piece shows that standard clearly: the knot count is high enough to carry fine vine work and small flower heads without the outlines blurring, the back is regular with no pulled rows, and the pile depth is consistent across all 4 corners. At 9' x 12'2" it covers a full dining set or anchors a large seating group, and buyers shopping other options in this footprint can compare the full range of 9x12 hand-knotted rugs before deciding.
