Design and Motifs

The field follows a classic all over floral plan, built on a light diamond lattice of thin red and olive vines. Where the vines meet, the weaver has set a large round rosette, some rimmed in deep red with sage petals, others in olive with rose pink centers, and between them sit smaller 8 petal blossoms, serrated leaves and tiny buds that keep the ground from ever reading as empty. The repeat is large enough that the pattern still reads from standing height across a room of this length. The main border is a wide red band carrying alternating ivory palmettes and green split leaf scrolls with small rosettes between them, and the corners resolve cleanly, which is a fair test of drafting on a rug this size. Four narrower guard bands, two sage and two ivory, step the design down to the plain outer edge and finished selvage.

Ivory, Sage and Deep Red: The Palette in Detail

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to stark white, and it shifts slightly lighter or deeper depending on the direction of the pile. Against it the weaver worked a restrained, almost herbal palette: soft sage green, a darker olive for the leaf outlines, dusty rose pink in the palmette centers, muted gold ochre in the vine work, and a true deep red that appears both as the border ground and as the halo around the largest rosettes. There is no high contrast navy or black anywhere in the rug, which is what gives it its quiet, sunlit character. The red of the border is a rich madder tone rather than a bright fire red, so it frames the field without fighting it, and the small ivory and pink accents inside the border echo the field colors and pull the whole design together.

Jaipur Weaving and the Quality of This Rug

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great weaving centers of India, and India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. Nobody else is set up to weave a floor covering this long to this standard, on a loom wide enough and with enough experienced hands to keep tension even over 24 feet of length.
